#1834 | Wonder dog banned - he's too good
Clare O'Callaghan went to the pound looking for a pet. But she was taken not by the four-month-old kelpie pup's sweet face, but by his ability to jump 1.5 metres in the air from a standing start.
"It was like watching somebody on a pogo stick," said Ms O'Callaghan,of Toora, Victoria, with the kind of proud reverence that trainer Harry Telford used when talking about Phar Lap.
Indeed, Riley is the Phar Lap of high-jumping kelpies - only twice failing to win in 30 high-jumping competitions in the past four years.
Last year, Riley set a world record - 2.91metres - at the Casterton Kelpie Festival in Victoria.
In February, Ms O'Callaghan received a call from festival organisers who wanted to know if Riley would be competing.
"He'd already won the championship twice in a row," she said. "They told me if he won a third time he'd no longer be eligible for competition, and could only appear as an exhibitor instead.
"As a trade-off they said they were creating a Kelpie Hall of Fame, and that if Riley won again he'd be inducted into it." http://www.smh.com.au/news/pets/wond...492803691.html | | Community Moderator with 25,430 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: Eugene, Oregon Experience: Still kickin' |

#1835 | Orangutans concoct plant-based soothing balm
Indonesian wild orangutans have demonstrated a certain degree of medicinal savvy by deploying naturally-occuring anti-inflammatory drugs to "treat aches and pains", as the New Scientist puts it.
Four of the Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) were spotted by Cambridge University primatologist Helen Morrogh-Bernard in the Sabangau Peat Swamp Forest in Central Kalimantan preparing a "soothing balm".
Back in 2005, Morrogh-Bernard watched as an adult female picked a handful of leaves from a plant, chewed them, and used saliva to produce a green-white lather. She then "scooped up some of the lather with her right hand and applied it up and down the back of her left arm, from the base of the shoulder to the wrist, just as a person would apply sunscreen". http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/28/orangutan_balm/ | | Distinguished Member with 66,213 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: California Experience: Intermediate |

#1839 | British man proposes with crop circle
MELTON MOWBRAY, England, July 29 (UPI) -- A Melton Mowbray, England, man said he proposed to his girlfriend by plowing his proposal into a cornfield and flying her overhead.
Robert Szabo, 27, said he plowed the words "Sarah Marry Me" inside of a giant circle in a cornfield and then had a pilot take him for a flight over the cornfield with his intended, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.
"The pilot flew the plane past the field and pointed it out," Szabo said. "Sarah was overwhelmed, absolutely gob smacked. A few tears were shed but she said 'yes' straight away." http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2008/07/...5711217372461/ | | Community Moderator with 25,430 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: Eugene, Oregon Experience: Still kickin' |

#1840 | I-TEAM: SWAT Team Honored For Raid On Wrong House
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― On Monday, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan handed out honors to a team of officers involved in a botched raid at an innocent family's home more than seven months ago. The family is upset and their attorney criticizes the awards and questions the timing.
Just days before Christmas, the sound of intruders breaking into their home in North Minneapolis prompted Vang Khang to grab his shotgun to protect his six children. His terrified wife called 911.
Khang fired several shots at the "intruders" who turned out to be members of the Minneapolis Police Department's SWAT team. The officers returned fire. Their protective gear prevented them from being harmed by the bullets.
No one was hurt in the shootout last Dec. 16 and the Minneapolis Police Chief ordered an internal investigation. The house was left riddled with bullet holes and broken glass. Two days later, Dolan apologized to the family and launched an internal investigation to find out how the SWAT team wound up in an innocent family's house in the middle of the night.
The investigation determined that the team had gone there looking for a gang member's guns after an informant gave investigators in the department's Violent Offenders Task Force bad information. The investigation is ongoing.
On Monday, Dolan recognized members of the SWAT team for their bravery and how they handled the raid. With Mayor R.T. Rybak and other city officials looking on, the chief handed out medals and commendations. http://wcco.com/iteam/swat.team.honored.2.783216.html | | Distinguished Member with 66,213 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: California Experience: Intermediate |

#1845 | Pickup thief loses truck to carjacker
A pickup truck thief lost his purloined Chevy Silverado to an armed carjacker during a 7-Eleven stop.
Police Cmdr. Kelly McMillin says "you couldn’t make up something stranger than this."
Thirty-three-year-old Edward Bishop told police he stole the pickup Saturday then, while sitting outside a convenience store, a man with a gun hopped in and ordered him to start driving.
The pickup ran out of gas and the gunman ordered Bishop to get out and push, but Bishop ran away and called police. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...1D33.DTL&tsp=1 | | | |
