Fermenting herring prompted gas leak call

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A suspected gas leak in a Stockholm, Sweden, neighborhood turned out to be fermenting herring, fire officials said.

Stockholm fire fighter Bjorn Hornsten told national radio station SR that fire trucks and police vehicles were sent to the neighborhood Saturday after someone reported what smelled like gas in a stairwell.

A Tulsa woman took shelter in a deep freezer during severe storms last weekend—but the freezer itself turned out to be the bigger danger. It seems she couldn't get out, authorities say, and she went missing for five days until relatives headed to the 59-year-old's apartment to look for her. She's been hospitalized with frostbite on her legs, but is in fair condition, reports AP via Fox News.

Contractors were in for a big—and not pleasant—surprise while cleaning out a foreclosed home in Dayton, Ohio, Tuesday: Stuffed into one of the closets were the cremated remains of 56 people, dating as far back as 1982. It appears the remains, all of which were contained in black urns labeled with names and dates, are connected to the McLin Funeral Home. The owner of the funeral home also owned the house, but the funeral home closed after its license was revoked for alleged law violations—including the possibility that a body was buried in the wrong grave. The owner also was accused of holding remains for ransom, the Dayton Daily News reports.

A Connecticut man shot dead a masked man he believed was trying to break into his sister's home, only to learn that it was his own 15-year-old son. Police say elementary school teacher Jeffrey Giuliano received a late-night call from his sister, who lived next door, about a possible intruder outside her home. He armed himself with a handgun and fired after confronting an individual who was dressed in black, wearing a ski mask, and carrying a weapon in his hand, CBS reports. Police arrived at the scene to find the father overwhelmed with grief. Tyler Giuliano was pronounced dead at the scene. "I can’t imagine what he felt when he took the mask off," a neighbor says. Police are investigating but no charges have been filed.
