#50 | Thanks a lot Dark Star,
I am so personally hurt at the lack of your geographical knowledge. It's no wonder the people across the border don't like us. It's bad enough no one here knows where Quebec or Mexico City is, but we don't even know about Long Island. Why George Washington, hisself, slept here (well he kind of slept everywhere...a man after my own heart).
But, what about the Battle of Brooklyn (B'klyn is part of Long Island you know)? And, Sayville was voted the nicest town in the U.S. of A. I'll have you know.
Federal Island indeed, Jeeze Louise! | | Distinguished Member with 3,486 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2001 Location: Indian Rocks Beach, FL. |

#54 | willo My ignorance is showing. I just looked LongIsland up in the EB, and learned that the island is 118 miles long, by 12 to 18 wide, and includes 4 of the counties of NY State. I really didn't know any of this until now. I thought you were playing a joke to see if we'd recognize it, and didn't want you to think you'd gotten one over on me Apparently the jokes on me
Hope you'll accept my apology | | Senior Member with 145 posts. | | Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: About 60 miles east of N.Y.C. |

#55 | Joke's on me too. I thought you were kidding, really.
Btw, those miles include B'klyn. and Queens at the Western end, not generally considered part of the Island by Islanders 'cause they're part of N.Y.C., but we are one big happy island.
You have got to have heard of the Hamptons. Billy Joel, Montauk Point (the end) and lots else out at the East End.
P.S. I'll tell my Uncle, "Big Louie", youse was kiddin bout bean in da hospatal, on accounta you'd be in trouble. I fergot to menshun I cum from Brooklyn so were gonna furgetabout. | | Distinguished Member with 13,348 posts. | | Join Date: Mar 2001 Location: Thermopolis, WY Experience: Been there, done that, st |

#56 | Truly Ignorant I knew Brooklyn and Queens were adjacent to NYC, but I really didn't know that they were part of LI. I've certainly heard of the Hampton's, but again had no idea they were on LI. I just thought LI was another place like the ones above just mentioned. You've opened a whole new world for me.
Funny we should be having this discussion as the winner of the National Geography contest was just announced.
I was kidding you in the original post, as I thought you were trying to get our goat, so thanks for your good humor and info. | | Senior Member with 145 posts. | | Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: About 60 miles east of N.Y.C. |

#57 | Hey, humor's a good thing, right?
And here's something to ponder, why'd they name that place "heat (therm) o (oh?) polis (city)"? I'm no scholar,
but, ain't that Greek for "HOT CITY"?
Perhaps Thermopolis is the place to be when you be in Wyoming.
