Body Found Believed to Be WWII Airman

Wednesday, October 19, 2005 6:01 p.m. ET
By JULIANA BARBASSA Associated Press Writer

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Two climbers on a Sierra Nevada glacier discovered an ice-encased body believed to be that of an airman whose plane crashed in 1942.

The man was wearing a World War II-era Army-issued parachute when his frozen head, shoulder and arm were spotted Sunday on 13,710-foot Mount Mendel in Kings Canyon National Park, park spokeswoman Alex Picavet said.

Park rangers and specialists camped on the remote mountainside in freezing weather for an excavation expected to take several days. The body was 80 percent encased in ice, Picavet said Wednesday.

Good morning Bruce.

Yesterday near my home on the freeway....a man in a truck was driving along and in the middle of the road was an 18" long pipe that weighed 100 lbs. The man hit it...his SUV flipped and rolled.... and he died instantly....fate could be just a step away for any of us...and in odd ways. This man didn't have a chance! The police are trying to trace where the pipe came from...no one had reported it in the way nor tried to move it....this man just came along at the wrong time....right moment.....truly sad! The freeway was backed up for almost 5 miles an hour after the accident!

As my friend Barabara said this summer after her 14 year old son died of a heart condition after collapsing on the football field: "He was just going to be with us for a little while". Life is precious, life is tenuous, and it can all be over so fast,

Good morning back

Bruce....here's a sad example of being in the wrong place at the right time...how anyone could ever stand losing two children at once....when my cousins 12 and 8 drowned 41 years ago....my Aunt Marian and Uncle Billy were never the same! God bless the parents of this young brother and sister killed and the parents of the injured children! I hope this man suffers the maximum sentence allowed by law!

Two Children Dead, 11 Hurt in Calif. Crash

Wednesday, October 19, 2005 11:41 p.m. ET

VACAVILLE, Calif. (AP) -- A speeding car struck a parked car Wednesday, and both vehicles caromed onto a sidewalk near an elementary school, killing a young brother and sister and injuring 11 other people, police said.

The driver was being held on two counts of murder in the deaths of the siblings, ages 7 and 9, police Lt. Craig Rossiter said.

"He had to be going very fast. There was very major damage to the rear of a Camaro and it went a good 100 feet" before stopping, Rossiter said.

Suicide Mistaken for Halloween Decoration

Thursday, October 27, 2005 3:43 p.m. ET

FREDERICA, Del. (AP) -- The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging from a tree went unreported for hours because passers-by thought the body was a Halloween decoration, authorities said.

The 42-year-old woman used rope to hang herself across the street from some homes on a moderately busy road late Tuesday or early Wednesday, state police said.

The body, suspended about 15 feet above the ground, could be easily seen from passing vehicles.

She doesn't deserve to get a penny of that money Bruce! Personally I think the state should donate the money to charity now!

Wow! I remember this case and I hate to say I hope so...but I hope their bodies are in the minivan so the family will know for sure they are gone....the phone call alone makes me believe they are.... How ironic the police were looking for a missing fisherman's body at the time....

Authorities Find Minivan Belonging To Missing Kinston Women

POSTED: 11:44 am EST October 31, 2005
UPDATED: 1:51 pm EST October 31, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Authorities believe there may be a break in the case of two missing Lenoir County women who have been missing since Dec. 7, 2004.

Investigators said they found the minivan belonging to Gail Haddock-Dail and her granddaughter, Heather Roberts in the Neuse River near Fort Barnwell in western Craven County. On Sunday, divers had been searching the river for the body of a missing fisherman when they found the vehicle.

Haddock-Dail called her estranged husband, saying her vehicle was in the water, but then her cell phone died. The women were reportedly headed to Virginia to see members of their family. After months of searching and following leads, there were no signs of them.

Right now, the vehicle is still underwater. When crews get the vehicle out of the water, they plan to take it to a remote location for further investigation.
