Pa. woman with 97 cents gets $328K home

Associated Press

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - A woman pleaded guilty to fraud and other charges in what a prosecutor said was his first case in which a defendant stole an entire house.

Wendy Jean-Francois, 44, of Morrisville, pleaded guilty Monday in Bucks County Court to multiple counts of fraud, forgery and related charges.

Prosecutors said Jean-Francois sat down Oct. 5 at a settlement table at Rainbow Assurance, a mortgage title firm in Falls, with 97 cents in her bank account.

But she used two checks totaling $63,000 and a letter vouching for them, purportedly from a Wachovia Bank manager, and left with the keys to a $328,000 home
, prosecutors said.

Exonerated man dies in Ill. hit-and-run

By MEGAN REICHGOTT
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

CHICAGO -- Dan Young Jr. had a $150,000 check in his name awaiting the governor's signature - the price the state put on the nearly 13 years he spent in prison for murder before DNA testing cleared him. Young, though, will never cash that check.

He died Thursday, hours after being struck by a hit-and-run driver as he walked on the city's South Side.

Young, 45, had been a free man for just over a year.

His friends and family can be comforted by the fact that Young's greatest wish had come true, Zellner said. "He wanted his name cleared, and that it happened we feel comforted by that," she said.

I got a call last night from a man here in Port Huron wanting to know if I had three children and he named two of the three. He was looking up all women in the phone book with my last name. Here's why! He and his wife were driving down by the water and he spotted something green that looked out of place. It was a school book with the name Rachel ****** (my last name) in it. She had a note inside the book saying she was depressed and thought she might be pregnant and didn't know what to do! About 8 feet away on the seawall was a notebook of hers, a pair of socks and some spandex shorts. This man contacted the police. The officer found the girl's sister's name in the note...Julie ****** and said it sounded familiar! Turns out the officer had just taken a call earlier that Julie had intentionally driven her bike in front of a car! She was taken to the ER and released...but that doesn't mean she isn't on the psychiatric ward....the hospital does not keep that info in the general patient info. It gets weirder!!! The same night her 11 year old brother was arrested for attempted murder of his Grandma! He tried to stab her! This man who called wanted to see if I was their Mom. Now I like him am concerned Rachel may have committed suicide by jumping in the lake! There was one other woman's name in the phone book with my last name...he called her and she sounded elderly. When he asked if she knew Rachel ******....she started cryiong and going "oh no! No no no!!" So he is assuming she is the Grandma who was almost stabbed. He tried calling her back but she once again said the "oh no" and hung up! SO...he is now waiting for the police to call him back with any info on the family....and especially Rachel! I hope Rachel is alright....it just seems weird she'd leave those articles by the seawall.....

The Associated Press

Sunday, May 28, 2006 6:36 a.m. ET

STERLING, Ohio (AP) -- A first-time skydiver slipped from her harness during a jump Saturday and fell to her death, authorities said.

The 44-year-old woman from West Chester, Pa., was participating in a tandem jump, her first with the AerOhio Skydiving school near Sterling, about 40 miles south of Cleveland, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's office.

Midtown Rambo; Victim Fight Backs, Kills Robber

POSTED: 5:47 am EDT May 30, 2006
UPDATED: 7:49 am EDT May 30, 2006

ATLANTA -- Five robbers picked the wrong victim in Midtown Atlanta last night and one of them paid with her life.

The unidentified victim fought back; killing one robber and wounding another. Three other suspects are in jail.

The victim was walking home after getting off work as a waiter at Jocks and Jills.

The five suspects pulled up in a car and confronted the victim in the 500 block of Penn Street just before midnight.

The victim began running down the street yelling for help. Residents who heard him called 911. While he was running, the victim pulled a pocket knife from his backpack.

Two of the robbers jumped from the car. When one of the robbers pointed a shotgun at him, the victim kicked it out of his hands.

At that point two of the robbers jumped on the victim. During the struggle he stabbed both of them. One, a female, died of her wounds. A second is in critical condition.

Police arrived on the scene and with a description of the car; they quickly arrested the three other suspects.

The victim, who is a former U.S. Marine, will not be charged since police say he was acting in self defense.

So far police have not released his name.

Dude. That sounds like more than "just" a robbery attempt. Call me crazy, but if I'm going to rob someone.... it's not going to be someone who runs fast and makes a lot of noise. I'm just sayin..... that's a lot of trouble to go through to get a guy's wallet.
