Exclamation How to solve a downloading addiction?
My parents have been very mad today... Know why? i have surpassed my download limit for my isp. If you think its not serious think this: I have downloaded 118 GB over the past month. As you see my hdd is only 60 GB big. I am soo addicted to downloading mmorpgs and deleting them and downloading ANYTHING i see in the internet. I think i must have clicked on every single download button i have seen. Do you have any tips? I am starting school tomorrow so i think that might limit my use but i barely get any homework because i manage to finish it at school. I even downloaded this mmorpg 2 times for the heck of it. Any programs that will alter your connection to make sure not to download anything? Ill tell my parents to put some password on it.

Why don't you try some non-computer related activities? Do you like to read? Do you like sports? Woodworking?

Imagine a world without electronic goodies, then imagine all the happy, smiley people in that world doing all kinds of fun stuff. I know it's hard but such a world existed once upon a time.

I consider myself very healthy. Yes i do do outside type activities and i am planning on learning the guitar so i can stop myself from going on the computer. I am currently doing a fitness program called P90X:http://www.beachbody.com/product/fit...ode=P90XDOTCOM

Its a 90 day program and i am on day 20

I recommend it for ppl here who r out of shape.

All i am gonna do now is play LOTRO. Its an mmorpg that is gonna go f2p in 3 days .

I hope that stops my downloading addiction!

Sounds like this is something that you`re gonna have to deal with yourself. You list your experience as advanced, you could probably figure out how to get around any restrictions your parents could put on the computer. LOL One thing you could do is switch back to dialup, then downloading would be so slow and frustrating you`d soon find other things to do.

Maybe it would be better if we made some suggestions to your parents rather than to you.

Since school has already started, i think it might limit my computer use. The only problem is that in my school the teachers don't generally tend to give lots of homework. 30 minutes of homework at the longest. I AM gonna start learning the acoustic guitar so i think that might limit my download use .

I suggest you continue exploring internet for useful and educational porposes but knock off viewing all those videos and pictures that eat up megabytes of your expensive computer allowance. You can easily alter and police yourself by viewing text-only sites and get 99% of the useful information from them
(copied from IE help file)
"Turn off multimedia in Internet Explorer
By default, Internet Explorer displays multimedia (such as pictures, videos, or sounds) used on webpages. You can turn off multimedia if you want to increase the speed at which the page loads or if you use a screen reader. Here's how:

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
In the Settings section, under Multimedia, clear any of the following check boxes to turn off that type of multimedia:
Play animations in webpages
Play sounds in webpages
Show pictures
Notes

If the Show pictures check box is cleared, you can still display an individual picture by right-clicking its icon, and then clicking Show Picture.
If the pictures on the current page are still visible after you clear the Show pictures check box, click the Refresh button ".

Now, there is a noble pursuit! Good luck with it and just don't get frustrated because it takes a lot of work and dedication.

When you download just the right piece of malware, or just the right virus your downloading will be stopped involuntarily.

Hi arceus12345,

You are not alone in your addiction! Lots of posters here at TSG have the same addiction, but may not have yet dealt with it as you are - i.e. facing it head on and seeking alternatives.

People can overcome their addictions, but not quickly, UCLA psychologist says.

Millions of Americans suffer from severe addictions that can ruin lives and are extremely difficult to control. Nearly 2 million enter roughly 12,000 addiction treatment programs in the U.S. each year. And each month, some 15,000 people turn to Adi Jaffe's All About Addiction websites at www.allaboutaddiction.com and at Psychology Today, which provide information, the latest research and answers to readers' questions.

Good luck with your guitar lessons - that's a great start!

-- Tom
