Speed up Dr. Web
Well this isn't exactly free...

For those Dr. Web users out there... you might know that Dr. Web uses the AVP engine (which isn't exactly the fastest engine out there)... But I stumbled upon a program I knew I should not have missed...

Its called adinf32. I cannot believe I missed this one... but adinf can plugin to Dr. Web. Adinf is an integrity checker that checks if a file has been scanned already by Dr. Web. If it is, then it goes on to the other file. If the file has been modified or is new.. then Dr. Web scans it with it. (This is similiar to Sophos's Intercheck technology) The result? A much much faster system. You can also recover from a virus easily with Adinf.

I second codexaenir's recommendation of adinf. I've been using it for several months, & it is superb.

A system integrity checker [that's what adinf is] gives an important extra layer of protection, plus it will alert you to malware that is stealthed, or for which signatures don't yet exist.

Adinf will shake hands equally well with Dr Web, McAfee or AVP antivirus programs. I use it in conjunction with AVG so I have to do a manual scan of possible bogeys -- takes no effort or skill to do so [else I'd be sunk].

The standard version cost me $25. The pro version, as I recall, was 10 or 15 bucks more. The only major difference between the standard & pro versions of adinf [other than price] is that the pro version has one additional CRC [I think it's a 64] for generating hash-ID's for files. Get the pro version if & only if you are in a high risk for malware. The standard version can go up as high as CRC 48 [32+16], which should be quite strong enough for most folks.
