Need some Power Supply & motherboard advice??
Hey guys, Im building my own computer, and im gonna have alot of high quality componets. Its bascially goign to be used for gaming and surfing the net. I was thinking like a 400W? or should i spend the little more money to get a 5? Also what are some of teh top brands used today? I heard western digital and seagate are suppose to be good. Also what about a Motherboard? I need something with a AGP slot and alot of room to upgrade and supports 512mb? Has to be ATX. For the Power supply im looking to spend around 100, and the moterboard about 200

What kind of processor are you going to run?

Here are my recommendations for mobo's

If Pentium, then I'd suggest the ASUS P4C800 Deluxe

If AMD, then I'd suggest the Abit KV8-MAX 3

A 400W power supply from Zalman should be sufficient for gaming. I don't see any reason to get anything more powerful than that unless you had one of those dual AGP mobo's but to the best of my knowledge they aren't in the mainstream market yet.

As far as a hard drive goes. I haven't had that much luck with Maxtor hard drives. If I were you, I'd stick with Seagate or Western Digital. Those are the only ones I ever use now.

www.newegg.com should have all of these items on their site for a fair price. They are reputable and I buy stuff from them all the time and I've never had any reason to complain about anything.

Good luck with your new system, kiregar

You'll start a war asking that question
Both AMD and Pentium are great processors. I personally like Pentiums just because in my experience they tend to run a little cooler and I had a spat with AMD back in 99' about something and I really don't care to give them any more of my money

Either way you go, it will be a good choice really.

Athlon
I persoanlly like amd better, as long as you have sufficient cooling. The reason, especially for gaming is that amds shut down when they over heat, compared to pentiums which just run slower. Id persoanlly rather have mine shut down and tell me that its too hot so I can fix the problem rather then have it run slow and wonder why. Also Id recommend the asus a7n8x mobo, its great, agp 8x slot, room for 1.5gb ddr 400 ram, really easy to overclock. Just remember that cooling is extremely important and underrated.

Additional items
After re-reading your original post I also had to recommend the asus sk8v mobo, if you really wanna go high quality (and price). The mobo itself isnt expensive, below your 200 limit, but it runs the athlon 64 cpu which is a bit costlier, but its the future as well. Also, Im happy with my seagate hds, Id really recommend whichever way you go that you get a mobo with onboard sata\raid, which both of the mobos ive listed have, it really speeds up your hds, and sata drives are only a few doallrs more expensive than regular ata 133 drives.
