Smile The Google Toolbar
Hello,

I have been considering for some time now getting the Google Toolbar for my PC. On my old computer [which was three times LESS powerful than the one I have now], I downloaded the toolbar and a few weeks later IE stopped working altogether.

I am not suggesting it was Google Toolbar that was responsible for what happened, but I am still unsure. Having now fully protected my PC with all the right software, I want to download the Google Toolbar to stop all the annoying pop-ups [ I know it doesn't stop them ALL] that keep cropping up when I use my computer. One of them tried to open earlier and it crashed IE completely.

Any helpful advice, experience or handy information on Google Toolbar will be extremely appreciated, so I can feel better about downloading it [or not, as the case COULD possibly be].

Thank you in advance.

Hi Raziel,

Personally I hate Tool bars, I have not used one in years and like you I had a much slower system then including less bandwidth. For me though they just slow you down and clutter up the screen.

If you want my advice, don't bother with tool bars and use Firefox(in sig) instead of IE. Firefox is so much better than IE and I very rarely get pop-ups. Plus the TSG plug-in brilliant

I won't allow it in my puter.
Once - my mouse slipped up and I got it. It was severely reprimanded and told to undo its mistake.
My Norton stops the popups - so I'm not sure what your talking about here.
I even have my firewall set to block the google toolbar ad from the main google page.

Just my opinion...FWIW

Thanks to you both for the sound advice, I appreciate it

I have just downloaded the Install Set Up for Firefox. One question... does it become the default Browser? If so, how can I make sure I can use both IE and Firefox if needs arise.

Been using the Google Toolbar on both my IE and Firefox for years
and find it an invaluable tool.

Google Toolbar for Firefox

You CAN have Firefox and IE open at the same time.
However, you'll find yourself using IE less and less,
perhaps ONLY for the Windows Updates.

You can set Firefox as your Default Browser during the setup.

I use the google toolbar in IE...on the RARE occasion I use IE. But I use Firefox exclusively for day to day use.

IE is only broken out of it's slumber when a site is coded in a manner that only IE can read the mess...

Yest you can uninstall it but you might be left with the BHO in the image below that is impossible to remove. It doesn't hurt anything but is just annoying.

They both run fine Raziel, in fact you will need to keep IE anyway as windows update needs it. Plus the one thing that lets Firefox down is that it is not 100% compatible with every website. To be fair though I've only come across 2, Microsoft.com and the UK job centre site, so if you get the dreaded P45 you will have to use IE .

To set defaults for Firefox go:
Tools/Options/General and in the default browser section press Check Now.

To set defaults in IE go:
Tools/Internet Options/Programs and tick the box a the bottom of the page. Restart IE and you will be prompted to change.

Thanks to everyone who commented! All your sound advice has helped me to decide to get the toolbar. And thanks for the info to set the defaults.

I have removed it with HijackThis and BHO Demon. I get a Spybot/Teatimer popup telling me there has been a change in the registry but when I reboot the google BHO is back when I run BHO Demon.

Try fixing it with TeaTimer disabled (and disable SpySweeper/MS AntiSpyware/Ewido Realtime Protection, etc. if you have them running.)

Okay I turned off Teatimer and deleted the BHO iwth HiJackThis and then ran BHO Demon and it was gone. Then I turned Teatimer back on and rebooted and ran BHO Demon and it came back.

If I could just find the entry in the registry where teamtimer stores it I might be able to delete it for sure. I have searched the registry to no avail.

Any more ideas and thanks for getting me on the right path.

I want to comment about Google Toolbar even if it's posted back on Nov7, lol.

Okay, first, I hate toolbars, and second, I hate toolbars.

They only make your space smaller, even if I'm in Full Screen, I'm still not contented, so I'm not planning to install that Toolbar or the Google Toolbar extension for Firefox.

By the way, If you want to search using Google.com, there's a Search Bar next to the Address bar (this is in Firefox, not IE), you can just use it, you can also add different Search Engines there, and you can even make one. Start here: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/
