If your computer does not require directx8 to run something or is running fine with a lower version, do not upgrade to past directx7. directx8 is horrible as far as I can tell. There have been many reports of things stopping working after the install of directx8. Right know, I am pretty sure that directx8 is the reason my cd-drive is not working. directx8 is very buggy and microsoft needs to make directx better before you should upgrade. Avoid it if you can.

Dunno, downloaded it soon after it's release, never had a problem, I play Games such as Deus-Ex and Unreal Tournament without a hitch, you may look farther for your CD Rom problem....Rhett
