Here's the catch - aside from the good karma we get for offering a great free service, every once in a while we get to send you email advertisements for products and services that we think are useful. (We'll never give your email address to an advertiser - any emails will come straight through us.)

I realize that. But works for now. If Gmail does change the software, your files are still in your account, right? Besides, Gmail is going to start their own online storage soon.

The big concern seems to be privacy, understandably so....

backups...
If you are serious about your backups, then do not go for a free service. These services have their drawbacks and catches which are hidden. The first think to look out in any backup/ storage solution is the number of years they have been operational. The sad reality is most of these services close the shop suddenly leaving a lot of consumers of such services with a bitter taste. There is nothing free in the real world, go for a reputed online storage solution like IBackup as data storage prices are really low nowadays. The IBackup solution costs around 10 USD for 5GB of space.

The Google solution is going to be a beta version, then you can’t rely the service as it is not fully operational. Again this may be a rumor as google has not officially confirmed this.

Try this online storage service as suggested by Jas. It has various applications which will help you to transfer and store your important data to your online storage account.

Seems like SPAM to me.
