Your favorite Freeware
What is your favorite Freeware and why? There is so much software out there and you can sit for weeks just trying to sift through everyone's comments. Apparently even the IT professionals can't agree on which products work best and lab results tend to vary. So, I thought it would be nice to hear from our community of people from advanced to novices what is best.

Please be sure to list a link to a "reliable/honest" download site for your selection

As pointed out above, THIS thread has been running since May of 2005 on the same subject.

That other thread is much too long, with many duplicates & lots of chit-chat having little to do with favorite freeware. Why not start over with a clean slate?

It may be "much too long" but it does contain "favorite freeware".

Why start a new one that will essentially duplicate the existing one?

ProcessLibrary.com Quick Access
The Windows Task Manager displays most of these processes but you have no information to learn and understand what is what.

This is nice to have something to help understand the jibberish they give you for processes in the task manager list. Now it dosent have them all but if you cant find it there just do a search. and it's small

they also have a few other programs

Remote Access
Ok... Here's my favorites for REMOTE Maintenance/access:

http://www.hamachi.cc

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vnc-tight/

Once I have a himachi VPN Peer to Peer network and Tight VNC running, I am smokin'!!!!

The Himachi is very, very easy to setup with step by step instructions. You must keep the New Network name and 'STRONG' password written down! I have had to make a new network because I 'forgot' my password.
I was SURE I couldn't forget it!

Also, with the TightVNC, I have gotten this to work great on a Dial up connection with the refresh of the desktop being OK.

All Free....
Although they do ask for donations...

Here are a couple of my favorites,

Wheels Of Volume

Freeware application that allows you to control the volume of your computer using the mousewheel. When the mouse wheel is clicked (middle mouse button) the sound will be muted. When used with a full screen application the top right corner will be used. Extremely intuitive in use. Uses very little computer resources and comes with full installer and deinstaller. Standard functions of the mousewheel are not affected in any way. Non-commercial distribution in any form allowed.

Extremely easy to use, and works excellently for me.

HideOE

HideOE is a small and handy tool, that creates a Tray Icon, and allows you to show and hide Outlook Express by double clicking the icon. It can also be set to automatically hide Outlook Express when you minimize it. It will also "pop up" when you have new email. No need to ever close and open OE ever again with this! All you do is install and check email by one simple click!

I use this every day and have never experienced a problem with it! Very handy for OE users.
