I find smart computing practices negate the need for a gaggle of utilities.

I find smart computing and the utilities you've listed a wise action.
In addition to what you posted, I also use Windows Defender, AVG Anti Spyware, Spywareblaster, AVG Anti Rootkit, Rootkit Revealer, and just recently to double check the above, I sometimes use Kaspersky's online av scanner. All free.

None of those are an unusual burden on resources of a newish computer.

I also found that a firewall router reduced a lot of traffic that my software firewall had to deal with. While not directly related to malware, imo, it does reduce the chance malware will ride in on an uninvited guest.

and running your web related applications in an isolated environment being one of the 'smartest computing practices'.

nothing will change your system. no junk, no rubbish. no need to waste of time and resources with endless scans for ad, spy or any other malware.
