SPOT Satellite Messenger
Has anyone seen these?

http://www.findmespot.com/

It's a satellite transmitter that can be used to request Search And Rescue, email a Google Map of your location to your family saying "All OK", or request non-emergency help. It looks similar to a beacon I carry in my Cessna, but costs a lot less! It's just $169 plus $100/year for service (which includes unlimited use of "911", "Help" and "Check In"). If I did a lot of outdoor activities, I'd probably buy one. Otherwise, people can probably just find me behind this computer.

I wonder how well it works hidden inside of a car. I can see a suspicious spouse or lover using this to keep tabs on their significant other.

Or if you have kids that are of driving range...

I didn't read into detail about their "upgraded" service -- it might be able to send signals automatically like that, but what about battery power?

Well, it appears that it can indeed send signals continuously, but only for 24 hours before manual intervention. http://www.findmespot.com/ExploreSPO...kProgress.aspx

Includes 2 AA 1.5V lithium batteries; under normal usage a full battery charge should meet or exceed the following

* Power on, unused: Approx. 1 year
* SPOTcasting tracking mode: Approx. 14 days
* 9-1-1 mode: Up to 7 consecutive days
* SPOTcheck OK/√: 1900 messages
