If you're looking for XP to be installed then Pentium 4 would be fine. I've had an IBM Netvista with a 2.66ghz P4 for nearly 4 years and love it because it does everything I need and then some. After recently adding additional ram XP runs better than ever. For gamers however the onboard graphics of that model probably wouldn't do, they'd want to purchase a separate video card.

Incidentally I just came across an IBM model (not Netvista) listed at Heartland America, they send me a catalog every month and the price is only $300.00 for a P4 2.6gh/512mbs ram with Windows XP installed. It's refurbished though still a good deal for students considering new they can run over a $1000.00.

Like CDA asked........what are you using it for?

Do you need it for school work?

Do you have the time to fix it during school if there is a major issue, or more convenient to fall back on a warranty?

Do you have the skills to assemble your own?

Dell still sells XP machines.

I bought an Acer 1 1/2 years ago that I really like.
I also built one about a year ago from a guide similar to this budget box ...to be used off line only: Link
That has worked out very well, also.

Either way is good, but buying a warranty and service agreement can be better for some people.
Just depends on 'you'

BTW, whether you buy or build, the newer chips, AMD and Intel, offer low wattage CPUs that run cooler and cost a few dollars less to operate than 'old tech'. There are versions of 65 and 45 watt CPUs worth considering if heat and operating costs are considered.

School Work
Music
Gaming
Yeah i have the time from when i get back from school
I think i have enough experience to build one but i am lazy.
Whichever works out cheaper is best.

I usually recommend to build your own computer as you can customize it towards your own needs. You may want to consider going Intel 45nm CPU's such as the E8400.

Generally, most boards still support XP since Vista is still an OS that has to be patched and most of the market is still on XP. A budget usually determines how much you can go.

I hope this isn't too much to ask but is there any parts you could recommend?
I need a motherboard with PCI-E because my graphics card at the moment is rubbish.

I'm on a budget and i live in the uk.

Thanks

What is your budget? What sites do people in the UK use for purchasing?

CPU

Motherboard

Others may disagree with my choice but IF my calcs are right, you are paying close to £200 without shipping. If you want you can include Memory to that or a video card. It's up to you.

Someone else may recommend a different board so wait and don't make a decision yet.
