I'd like to file a complaint about the "help" I've received.
I have a open support issue that has not been resolved and the person who was "helping" me refused to help me further due to my hesitance to do low-priority actions.

I'd also like to say that AVG is an anti-virus NOT a virus scanner, and spybot as far as I know does not scan for viri.

Addtionally, I'd like to know why "virus scanners" conflict with each other but not anti vrius software. Or why anti-virus software does not conflict when "virus scanners" do.

I'd like to generally know why "virus scanners" conflict to begin with.

If you don't wish to follow the directions given you by the "helper", then that person can no longer be responsible for the results of the help. Complex problems, especially, generally need a planned approach for solution, and people who do it a lot develop formulas to make it easier for them to go through the steps. So, if you don't like the approach, you will just need to find someone else that does it differently. No helper worth his salt would follow the directions of the person who needs the help any more than a person should perform their own brain surgery.

This would be a lot more valid point if there was any logic behind what he wanted me to do. And I'd probably have an easier time accepting his or her refusal if I understood the issue I brought up.

You'll have to excuse me for being skeptical of something that sounds so suspicious.

Also, spybot wasn't even working properly at the time, I had actually not realized it was even still on my computer.

No one has picked up the issue since then.

Spybot isn't an antivirus. He told you to remove one of Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG, both of which are antivirus software and which would conflict. He said to remove spybot because there are simply better antispyware alternatives out there.

As to your other question, you've got it backwards. AVG is an antivirus, MSE is an antivirus, and it's antivirus software which conflicts.
The reason that scanners don't conflict is that they're not running all the time, but only run when you tell them to scan. If you were to launch two scanners at the same time they could have problems, but it's quite safe to have one of them sitting idly on your hard drive.
Antivirus software on the other hand runs constantly. It demand access to every file, every network connection, and every change made on your computer so that it can check whether that's likely to be malicious, and react appropriately. Having two at once means that there are two programs insisting on that first look at everything. At best it slows down your computer terribly, and at worst it leaves you with less protection than a single AV because each prevents the other from effectively meeting the threat. Sometimes one AV can actually detect the other's behaviour as being malicious and try to shut it down! It's like the police trying to arrest someone for drug smuggling, and the FBI bursting in to arrest them for kidnapping and possession of the (confiscated) drugs.

Ok, then explain why I can run super anti-spyware at the same time as AVG? SAS seems to have the same protection as the resident shield.

Ent explained it very well. SuperAntiSpyware is not an anti-virus program and therefore can be run alongside an anti-virus program.

Please note as well that this is not the proper venue for making a complaint against another member.

If you wish to make a complaint of any kind then you should contact an Administrator by either private message or e-mail to discuss the matter so please keep this in mind in the future.

In this case, your complaint has been duly noted. However, as mentioned, it's important to follow the instructions posted when seeking assistance as they are part of the troubleshooting process and could have a bearing on the issue at hand.

If you have any further questions about security programs, feel free to start a thread in the General Security forum as this forum is for Site Comments or Suggestions. As such, I'm closing this thread.
