Software Upgrade 27 Feb 2005
Howdy all,

We just upgraded to the latest version of vBulletin (3.0.7), and I re-applied all of our special features and hacks. While doing the upgrade, I discovered that free disk space was critically low on our database server -- so much so that we may have lost a few picture attachments from some threads. I think everything was rescued safely, but do let me know if you discover otherwise.

As always, please report any strange problems here. These upgrades are quite an undertaking due to the number of extra features I've written into this site (thanks to your suggestions!), so it's always possible that something won't work the way it once did. Report it here, and please remember to include what server you're on when you notice the problem. Look at the bottom-left of any TSG page to see what server you're on.

Thanks!

Mike...
Do you ever have a "normal" day? IE. Get up 6 or 7am, go to work at the store (you are there everyday, right?), go home 5 or 6pm, go to bed 10pm?

There's a 6am?!?!?!

I usually get up around 8am, go to the store or do appointments... I'm not at the store very often, usually out on appointments, then work on TSG behind the scenes for a few hours... watch some Stargate while writing PHP is the best... go to bed around 2am? And maybe see Heather somewhere in there.

EA, I haven't seen you in a while. Glad to see that you have great taste in Sci Fi.

Is the database server for all the forums or just some of them.

I do know you have had times on and off where the site seem dead after you got the new server.
Then I think at time if thing are just slower it seems to effect Discussion forums more.

Part of the problem is also that Random has some very long threads, and some threads that email a bunch of people when someone replies... One of the upgrades I did tonight should help that a little bit, though.

RDA = At least one episode per day.

Poor Heather!

My attachments and posts are probably what filled up the server!

What kind of space requirements does the current board need?
Are we in to Jigabytes?

Why not just put a cap on the threads so they can only have so many post.
You can alway in the last reply of a thread post a link the the new thread and the first post of the new thread you can post to the other thread.
Like I did with fun games and I made a fun games II.

We can make a new...
Tsg Coffee Shop
Everyone Can Display An Image!!!
Joke/humor time
etc
etc
etc

Also see that Civilized Debate and Thread Games & Arcade Discussion has some long threads too.

But it seems without counting them all that it may be good to take about 50 threads and start a 2nd one on each and then you can limit how many post are in each thread after we get the change over.
Maybe make a hack so your see a count down of the last couple of post you can make in the thread like 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 post away from thread ending. To go on start a new thread.

I can start some new thread if you like Mike.

It won't make any huge difference immediately, but long term as the very long threads are rarely referenced, it may really help... especially compared to letting them continue to grow. Don't do anything yourself just yet, but I"m going to look into doing something like what you described.

That is just it as time goes on it will just grow and grow. I am sure 1000's and 1000's are getting emails for new post etc and they only posted in the thread once. Then all the people like me who post in a set number of threads get a email over and over.
Now I have the email turned off. I only subscribed to a couple of threads, other send out once a week but most I said NO email too.
Who needs to know about new post in the threads you know are getting post every day.
But let me know when your ready and I can do some new {Part II} threads.

Give me a week to see what I can come up with, and then feel free to remind me if I haven't followed up.
