My lousy opinion may or may not belong here but I'll give it anyway. I found TSG when I got a serious infection. TSG helped me out (saved me really). I helped a friend out with his computer. It was real important because he is disabled and NEEDS the PC.
I then decided to learn malware removal & am studying it currently. As a result I began to spend more time here and wandered into CD where I gut sucked into a few ugly topics. This nearly got me to the point of frequenting another forum but I changed my mind. There are individuals who don't understand what civilized means and they should be moderated. Random is a great place to socialize verbally and perhaps tighter controls there would work as well.
If you remove the forums other thread will get hijacked and devolve into CD and RD threads in a different area.
Again, just my opinion.

We have clear rules in place for those "other" forums, so such antics would quickly be shut down.

Ah yes...the yearly "what to do with RD and CD debate".

Without them you end up with a lot of off-topic threads in other areas.

With them, you end up with moderation issues.

Clearly, but the volume of traffic that happens in CD and RD, people clearly enjoy posting there. You can NEVER appease everyone. Heck, it's hard to appease most people. Everyone uses TSG for something different. Granted, a large portion of my posts are in CD and RD, but I do try and contribute to the web development and programming when I get the chance.

Yeah...so my point is basically...other than for load balancing and managing outages of web servers, I don't see a reason to split them. But then, I don't see how often posts are being reported...I know I maybe report something once a month, and that's usually a spammer.

Well, the volume of reports and squables from CD exceeds all other forums combined, just FYI.

Do you talk with your coworkers at work about non work related things?

Of course neither of us are companies....my point was, it's human nature to interact with one another apart from the main reason we are together.

When we go to work, we do our job, and we socialize with our peers. No different than when we go onto TSG, we get to know other contributors, and random/civdeb is a place for us to discuss non technical matters between our solving tech problems.

It can also be a place for someone to hang out and wait for their problem to be answered, rather than having people just pop in, ask a question and never return.

Well I agree with you on one point---TSG is family friendly , and I care about reputation also.
I read the PC magazine articles and the comments by the disgruntled, not impressed with the comments at all. You will ALWAYS have a number of people who will complain about everything, and with a site this big , with so many members , its to be expected.
Even in a work-place --100 employees for example, 15 will be whining about something and 5 ?, they will do everything possible to make the majority unhappy. Crybaby --tattlers--fault-finders-- and they have to mind everyones business. Impossible to please --and impossible to shut them up. That came to mind while reading the comments in article.
I will give example >>> "All good things come to an end, and the Tech Support Guy forums are no exception. What was once an excellent tech forum is now nothing more than a chat room" ---this is totally false , and why read this persons comments any further?. This site is best at tech help , expertise is outstanding , and few questions go unaswered, I cruise the tech sites , and someone is very lucky to even have posts answered at most of them.
In no way does Random --CD -- Game or any other forum lessen the quality of tech help here.
Here is another one >>> "With moderators that sexually pester female members, administrators unwilling to enforce rules and member cliques too quick to dismiss someone who doesn't fit exactly" --- foolishness. Flirtation , teasing , with members who are not offended. Time some lighten up and have some humor. Our moderators have never harrassed female members from what I have seen , and if one was uncomfortable , well--I know our mods and they would cease the teasing. Its nothing more than what goes on in workplace , and everywhere else.
I have also watched mods in action at other sites -- and our Mods don't abuse. Even in disagreement they don't use their status to bully.
Failure to enforce rules ? . I once stepped over line and was quickly given kick in pants by cookiegal !, had a vacation from TSG. She did exactly what was needed {my temper is not one of my strong points} , and I still feel bad for causing her, a mod to take action--I greatly respect Cookie.
Cliques? . When I first came here , and ventured from security into CD, I hit some bumps , but was never made to feel unwelcome by most, in fact , quite opposite. In spite of differences in opinion, some fine folks who made me feel welcome.
Point is , some are going to be negative --sour grapes. My experience here does not match in any way what those people relate.
I am sure the mods get plenty of PM's from those type , probably much like the comments posted in PC mag.
I challange anyone to show me a better or more complete tech/ discussion site, it just isnt there.
Where else can you go and get such diversity of subjects/ forums on one single page?.
As well thought out or laid out???
Sometimes I read tech subjects -- sometimes look at members photos {butterflys to cats and nature}-- argue politic--read the links posted ,read humor, read discussion on members motorbikes--maybe even read about Mulders bicycle!
What is wrong with that?.
The thing that really bothers me is people who act like they are "victims" of Random or CD.
If they don't like those particular forums --why do they go there ????. Why try to spoil for others???.
Its Mike Cermaks site , and he can do as wishes, but I do think if members opinions are ask , maybe it should be wider sample of opinion?.
I am not trying to be argumentative , just see what IMO , is too much negativism.
I am not opposed to change , in fact the changes in security help was smart , too many like me trying to help {blind leading blind}, but I do appreciate the basic build of this site.
I know if it wasn't the great site that it is , I wouldn't be paid member.>f
