If you don't like a particular item on the right, you can hide it by using the arrow at the top-right of it's box. If you want to hide all of them, Premium Members & HJT users can do that under My Account -> Edit Options.
I don't think that works.......that was the first thing I tried. Then I removed it with Firefox. But if you get that option working, then I will put it back on and maybe, ocassionally, take a peek at it.

I can't figure out why it wouldn't work for you guys. It works in all my accounts, even in IE6! I'll have to log in as one of you and see what's going on.

Yeah, I really can't reproduce that problem. Can one of you change your password and email it to me so I can try under your account? Thanks!

Tag Clouds strike me as being nothing more than Favourites or book mark type concepts.
To me its a quick way of trying to find threads that deal with a particular issue and are the most common items.
So for example, if I wanted to see what current threads are dealing with Excel, I could look to see if that word was in the list and if there, click on it to drill down to threads on that topic.
The more common the word or concept, the larger the font size.
At the moment its so new that it may not be very useful, but as time moves on and the library of common words build up, the greater the abilty to quickly find a topic related to your issue.
In acouple of months, maybe I have a problem with Viruses. So I can quickly look for viruses in the Tag Cloud list and click on it, and see a whole list of similar threads that may solve my problem.
If used properly, it can save a lot of time in relation to not duplicating thread topics of a similar nature or quickly finding topics that might answer my particular query.

I have never looked at tag clouds before, but is that the sort of idea Techguy or anybody else familiar with it?

If I have the gist of it, then I can see this part as being a very very useful tool that will save members a lot of time and effort.
It should probably be the first page that people would see when they log into Techguy IMHO. This would encourage users to search for an answer before creating a new thread.

Having said all that, I do hope I have the idea right

But you can't get rid of them completly... just being able to close them up is of no value in my opinion it still takes up a quarter of the page...

maybe I lost my premium account in the update but it says I'm good thru 2012 ?

From http://tagcrowd.com/ "When we look at a text cloud, we see not only an informative, beautiful image that communicates much in a single glance, we see a whole new perspective on text."

Looks to me like another example of The Triumph Of Image Over Substance, something users of the WWW are taking to the extreme. I must confess, however, that my TSG Report #8 (Fun Game) was a 'tongue-in-cheek' example of this phenomenon, though I did not describe it that way when I wrote it. So maybe when I update that report at the 100K-post mark (it's getting close), I'll present the results as a tag cloud. More fun... (pun intended).

I like it.....sort of like a live tracking device.....rather innovative, if I dare say so.

I don't see how useful it will be, since you have to attach the tag and pick good keywords for it to be worth anything. In addition, the tag for this thread doesn't show up.

Hmmmm... just mucking around with the Tag Cloud & clicked on 'tag cloud'

This is what came back. Using IE7 if that makes a difference. is it because there is no threads there?

I went in and edited the sidebar to be hidden and I still have it too. Seems like a lot of wasted space.

The arrows just close them up but they are still there.
