Privacy problem with PMs
This morning I got a PM from a member I had requested, and expected to be able to go to TSG website and click on the link to view the PM.

Since I first check my email when I bootup my computer, I got the PM emailed to me in addition to its being contained at TSG website.

Unfortunately, since emails are probably not encrypted by TSG when notifying members of a response to their subscribed thread posts, emails are sent in plain text format unprotected from prying eyes.

In this regard, I am requesting that TSG do one of the following to make PMs more private:
1) Notify by email that a PM has occurred at TSG without sending the content of the PM via that email - in order to keep it private and contained at TSG, or
2) Encrypt PM email with a Public Key for TSG - if 1) is too difficult to accomplish.

Thanks for listening,

-- Tom

How is that a problem unless someone else has access to read your e-mail?

You can go to Edit Options and uncheck the option to receive an e-mail notification for PMs. You will still see the orange highlight at the top of the page anyway and you can also elect to have a popup to indicate a private message has arrived if you wish.

That's probably the best option, but it's worth pointing out that this is not an encrypted web site, either. (HTTP, not HTTPS.) Thus, all text transmitted between your browser and this site is also in plain text (not secure). You should not use the Private Messaging (or any function on this web site) to transmit sensitive information, including credit cards, etc. (The obvious exception being the donation system, which you'll note directs you to an encrypted HTTPS site.)

Hi dotty, I have long held the belief that private messages are not really private at all, they can be read by anyone who has the wherewithall and knowledge to do so easily if they wanted too ...so like Mike says never use any sensitive information on any site that is not secure, especially on message board sites ...hope you are keeping well ?

I believe that too so why have private messaging? I guess we need to be wary but for some such news comes too late

I think its just for convenience really, just for information that you dont want made public at that moment, its really best to delete immediately its read ..here is proof that you can buy software that can read private stuff http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/a...o-advertisers/
