New users
Since one can NOT view a new user's profile, then they should NOT be able to request to be added as a friend.

We the current user need to have the same protection as I do not want to be spammed by some of these new users.

When viewing a new users profile I get "Sorry, but to prevent spam, the profile of new members is hidden until they've made a few posts."

Dave is correct,
Imagine if you'd get a lot of request and have to click reject.

I do NOT get a lot (how long is a short piece of string), but I do like to check on who is asking.

Neither do I, so maybe that accounts for my lack of appreciation of the problem

I guess one could turn off the "allow friendship" mode in one's account. But then one needs to prepare for loneliness.

I believe this has been discussed previously, but I know in the "help" forums most of the friendship requests are simply from people who want individual, personal instructions on how to solve their problems.

I have a standard post for PM requests for help, it directs them to post in the forums. A significant part of the value of the forums is the fact that a large searchable database is available.

Of course, that's when we get search working properly again.
