Exclamation Amber Alert
Mike, would you please consider placing the "Amber Alert" ticker at the top of every page of your site? The code can be found here... http://www.codeamber.org/ticker_code.html. Thanks.

I'm not sure why but I was unable to get into that page using that link ... and the link is correct as you have it.

I did get in there no problem using http://www.codeamber.org/ and then clicking on the tab for the getting a ticker once inside.

btw... that's my story and I'm sticking to it

Thanks so much for the feedback, DS . I have corrected the link ^^, so it should now work. The problem was, BTW, that I had posted the link like this...

http://www.codeamber.org/ticker_code.html.

instead of like this...

http://www.codeamber.org/ticker_code.html.

Bumping... to see what others think about this idea. With almost 44,000 members and untold numbers of guests viewing this site, TSG is a prime candidate to have the Amber ticker.

Think about it.
This could save a child's life.

Thanks for telling me that you're having a problem with the link. Here's some of the most important information...

Quote:
http://www.codeamber.org

The Origin of the Amber Plan

The AMBER Plan was created in 1996 as a powerful legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, a bright little girl who was kidnapped and brutally murdered while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas. The tragedy shocked and outraged the entire community. Residents contacted radio stations in the Dallas area and suggested they broadcast special “alerts” over the airwaves so that they could help prevent such incidents in the future.

In response to the community’s concern for the safety of local children, the Dallas/Fort Worth Association of Radio Managers teamed up with local law-enforcement agencies in northern Texas and developed this innovative early warning system to help find abducted children. Statistics show that, when abducted, a child’s greatest enemy is time.

What is the AMBER Plan?

The AMBER Plan is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases.

Broadcasters use the Emergency Alert System (EAS), formerly called the Emergency Broadcast System, to air a description of the missing child and suspected abductor.

This is the same concept used during severe weather emergencies. The goal of the AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe return of the child.

CodeAmber.org was established in August of 2002 to extend the reach of every Amber Alert to the World Wide Web. Please, add the Code Amber Ticker to your site today. You could help save a child's life.

What is an Amber Alert?

Each program establishes its own AMBER Plan criteria; however, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children suggests three criteria that should be met before an Alert is activated.
  • law enforcement confirms a child has been abducted
  • law enforcement believes the circumstances surrounding the abduction indicate that the child is in danger of serious bodily harm or death
  • there is enough descriptive information about the child, abductor, and/or suspect’s vehicle to believe an immediate broadcast alert will help
If these criteria are met, alert information must be put together for public distribution. This information can include descriptions and pictures of the missing child, the suspected abductor, a suspected vehicle, and any other information available and valuable to identifying the child and suspect.

How does it work?

Upon receipt of an Amber Alert from Law Enforcement Authorities anywhere in the world, day or night, the CodeAmber ticker will be updated immediately on our server.

During an Amber Alert all of the relevant details provided by the reporting Authority will be scrolled in the Code Amber ticker window.

The information will include the location of the abduction and contact information for the reporting Authority as well as links (if available) to images of the abductee, suspect composites and any other details provided by the reporting Authority.

How can people help?

You may be thinking that someone in a geographic location other than the immediate Alert area could not be of any help.

We include a link in each Alert which allows anyone to email the details of the Alert to anyone and everyone they know in the Alert area.

For example: If you are in London and you see an alert for Anchorage Alaska you will be able to email the alert to anyone you know in Anchorage by simply clicking a link in the Alert Ticker and entering their email address.

I think that if it is completely transparent (can't see the ticker) when there are no warnings, and then scrolls the info when there is, then it would be good. I couldn't quite tell how it worked from the web site... if it scrolls like the one there then I think it will be a big distraction at the top and break up a smoothly laid out web page... but if it only grabs people's attention when there is a warning out, I think it's a great idea. I think a good spot would be right underneith the turquois TSG banner inbetween the bottom of the guestion mark and the Register.

I added the ticker in an open spot on the top to see how it displays. Unfortunately, it shows up whether there is something important going on or not... and it seems you can't change the color.

Thanks for trying it out, deuce.

There are two tickers available. The first one is the one that scrolls, and it sure can be annoying.

But the second one does NOT scroll. It displays one sentence at a time, pausing for 4 or 5 seconds for each sentence. It's not bad at all.

Certainly not more annoying than most of the banner ads that are run at both the top and bottom.

Judaism looks very gravely upon misuse of speech. Our tradition teaches that lashon hara... literally "the evil tongue"... can destroy many lives...

The person speaking
People start mistrusting you. In the end, you're killing your own reputation. Furthermore, because you are misusing the gift of speech that G-d gave you, you are also lessened in His eyes.

The person spoken about
The person under discussion is, of course, being killed in everyone's eyes. Whether the information is true or false, it is hard to take back defamatory words already spoken and undo the character assassination already committed.

The person spoken to
Interestingly enough, this is the person who is the most culpable, even though s/he is seemingly the innocent one. All s/he did was listen! But the Talmud says that listening to lashon hara is even worse than speaking it; the person had the power to stop it and didn't.

Maybe someone can play around with the code and make it better for TSG.

Here's the first ticker... really annoying...

Code:
<!-- Begin Code Amber Ticker code. -->
<P ALIGN=CENTER>
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.2" src="http://www.codeamber.org/js/codea.js">
</script>
</P>
<!-- end of Code Amber Ticker code (c)Copyright codeamber.org 2002-->
And here's the second ticker... not too bad really...
Code:
<!-- Begin Code Amber Ticker code. -->
<P ALIGN=CENTER>
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.2" src="http://www.codeamber.org/js/nscodea.js">
</script>
</P>
<!-- end of Code Amber Ticker code (c)Copyright codeamber.org 2002-->

mishkan: I think it is a terrific idea if it can somehow be added to TSG. You know me...a children's advocate all the way! You never know who might be the one person to read the alert and maybe save one child's precious life! Very thoughtful of you to suggest this mishkan. Take care. angel

Just wondering if this has been discussed, yet?

If so, what's the outcome?

Thanks.
