Site was down for a while
Hi All, I suppose the thing I miss the most about America is the Time Zone!!!

I mean, no one notices when TSG goes down from 07:07 in the morning till 13:21 GMT+1, but the screams of horror and outrage if it interferes with any American posting are deafening!!!

Seriously though, Mike, what happened? It is a disastor if I can't get my morning fix of TSG!

I wonder if it would be possible for you to put up a page on a different Server, that all TSG links go to first, and that does an auto ping to check to see if TSG server is up before automatically showing the TSG site? this way, if your server goes down, or the break happens somewhere in the chain, we all at least get a little page that says "Site not available, general TSG gathering being held at IRC channel blah, blah, blah"". There's nothing more disheartening then getting the bog standaddr 404, page not found error, cause that really could be a problem with your own system, or tour own connection, or routing, or anything.

what do you think?

Hello - good idea RandyG. I was really upset to keep getting those awful Microsoft missives. Hate that when it happens and you don't know why.

Only problem with that (other than $$$) is that it would have to be on another connection that never goes down -- which is impossible, of course, especially when wires are always being upgraded (especially in this area, where most wires are 50 years old! =)...

Also, it would be a sad thing if the front server were to go down while the main one was still running.

Still waiting for the report... Official readings show down from 3:30am (Eastern) to 8:00am (Eastern).

Hello

Not being of a "technical" bent, is it not possible to have a different message come up instead of the standard one.
Or is that just impossible. Something alon the lines that you know the site is down, etc.

Or is that stupid, because I wouldn't get that message either if the site was down.

That's just it -- if the connection is down (as has been the case today and yesterday), there's nothing I can do. Your computer can't get to mine, so there's no way for you to get a message.

On the other hand, if the problem is HERE, for example when the server got hacked a few months back, I can put something up on another server to let you know what's going on, as the connection is still active.

Hope that clarifies things a bit... I certainly don't think it's worth the huge expense of another connection for "alert" purposes (even if I had that kind of money!), as connection problems are usually very rare -- it's sad that we've had them two days in a row, but I can't recall any other long outages in at least several weeks, or possibly months... (I'm not in front of a system now that can access those statistics, though).

Fair enough.

I didn't think that would involve any money to post a page up on a free site that would then redirect, but then I'm not a programmer/developer/web guru.

I posted this mainly to let others know that the site was down, and no, it wasn't just them!

It would be cool if we could get a notification, though, if there was an outage, or if it came back up.

Anyway, as always, glad we're back up and running.

Problem with free sites is that they go down pretty often (although usually only for a few minutes at a time), and have tons of ads... grrrr

We could notify you -- by email, I guess -- when the site returns from a long outage. However, I don't know how much good that would do. If I started emailing a few minutes after things are back up, everyone signed up for the service might not get the message for an hour, at which point they're probably back here anyway... *cough*addicted*cough*
