Question Thread Deletion Question
Hi: Just a question out of curiosity. When do threads actually get deleted once they are no longer of interest....such as in Random.....or resolved such as in the tech forums from years ago....or like threads? Do threads ever have the first batch of pages deleted though there are still many posts to it...as an example....Fun Game has 12567 posts in it.... do the very first posts in it ever get deleted? Or do all threads sit in limbo somewhere? Just curious even though curiousity killed the cat! Take care. angel

Edit: Reworded this so as not to be misunderstood.

It would be unusual for Mike to want any tech threads deleted, especially the "resolved" ones. TSG is a vast library of computer tech help... that's the main point of the web site, I would think.

Deletion
I once caught Mike in chat and ask if Rumors was a problem.. He replied "not yet".

I think it's important to keep the tech threads open, but I see no problem in cutting Random threads back to a month or so, odds are no one is going to read Rumors, fun game, or ramblin from the start.

.. however as Mish as said, there is lots of info in the pictures thread, it would be a shame to lose that...Rhett

Hi mish and Rhett: I was just wondering since there are 458,271 posts as of now and it seems like a lot to have sitting around. I was mainly thinking of the threads in Random where there are zero to say 50 replies and the threads are from awhile back. It wouldn't hurt to scale back Rumors by deleting some of the posts that aren't up to date. And of course the archives are great for the tech threads. Was just thinking why keep all those dead threads in Random alive. Thanks for the replies! Take care, angel

mish: Still agree it would be nice to have a separate graphics forum as a sub forum. angel

Actually... I know of a couple of people that actually read both rambling and/or rumors start to finish recently. I know for sure no one will miss the early part of fun game... but I do know for sure people are going to miss any part of the rumors or rambling. Those were fun times and we got to know alot of each other in those threads... and I my self do catch my self back reading back posts in those threads.

I think that for the most part... many of the threads in random can't be deleted. Some can, but most others have helped to form a strong community here and I frequently see people in "who's online" reading some real old threads in random... and frequently see people posting to old threads in random. I think that if you delete some of the "more important" threads in random, (which basically means almost all of them aside from ones like fun game) you take away some of the character that has been built here over time. As for deleting tech threads................ that is blatantly defeating the sole purpose of this site.

Decuce: My actual original thought which I should have mentioned only was to delete the threads in Random that either no one or very few replied to....the ones that belonged in the joke/humor thread in the first place for example. Those are the ones that could be deleted....there are lots and lots of them. We've agreed about not touching tech threads. Thanks for your reply Deuce. Take care. angel

Because then when you click on the link to that thread you would be taken to the last page of that thread.

I could perhaps see a Random cleanup which would remove all threads below a threshold number of replies (say 10 for the sake of argument) AND which hadn't been replied to for a certain length of time (say 30 or 60 days). The birthday and congratulatory threads, for the most part, also do not serve much purpose beyond that time frame, although singling them out for deletion might be more difficult.
Unfortunately, if it comes down to a bandwidth/storage space crunch, these are not the threads which would be causing a problem, and the ones that could become a problem - Rumors, Images, Ramblin', Baby Pics, Show Yourselves, etc - are the ones most responsible for the character of the place.
