Chat Takes Too much resources
I have noticed that LOTS of people have problems getting into and using chat. Not just Java problems but beecause it takes a lot of resources. I often cant use IE or other browsers while in chat or it will crash. Right now I am posting with no mouse. It wont respond with chat open and i dont want to close it now. I got here using the F6 and tab keys.
Basically im asking if anything can be done about this so I can surf and chat at the same time, I already have 256 megs of RAM and that should be plenty. The reason I didnt ask this in Web & Email is because I think it is RealChat, not me.

Chat crashes my PC every time I go there.

I get lots of errors and am told to install windows again. A reboot clears things up.

I am using a 700 mhz pc with 256 megs and win 98 se..on dial-up...I have been in chat at the same time with Opera and I'E (fooling around) and never noticed a big slowdown, there must be another factor involved here, is your Java updated ??...Rhett

I also have 256 Meg RAM... and windows 2000 and a 56K dial-up. I am able to chat without any problems, with as many as 33 separate IE6 windows open... that was just an experiment a while ago. The only times that I have problems with chat is when I forget to turn off my "privacy settings" in Zone Alarm Pro.

Maybe you can try changing the settings on your system? Just threw that out there... I'm not extremely knowledgeable about computers.

"Chat Takes Too much resources"

Maybe the fact that the chatroom is an applet, and that an applet is a program designed to be executed from within another application.... applets cannot be executed directly from the operating system.

Anyone recall the link to the Sample Chatroom a few of us visited?
maybe there's an upgrade and we should look there to see.

If you mean the sample RealChat its at RealChat.com. I am using
JAVA Version 1.4
java runtime environment standard edition build 1.4.1 b-21
Java hotspot client vm 1.4.1 b-21 mixed mode

Maybe it matters if you got the download from MS, KRM, Sun, or somewhere else.

I have been using Opera in chat and have not experienced any problems either. My java is still 1.3.1 Did notice that it does use a few more resources. But it hasnt knocked me out or froze up yet!
I have 512 ram and am also using cable. I did notice though that if I click on somebodys name in room list that I have froze up . So I dont do that anymore.

See, it only has problems randomly or when you use certain feauters. For me its random, for you its when you click a user name.

Well I have been saying how this never seem to effects me but finally it has. I have 256ram and it was sucked right down by the chat program. My computer froze up and a restart had to take place.

When the program is enabled it quickly can take a computer running at 81% resources to 50% plus...mine froze after 50. And a denial of access to control panels or properties under my computer.

Not a good chat program. Yuck!

Running a 700 celeron with 384 megs ram Windows 2000 on a DSL connection.

Not seen this problem with Mozilla and Sun Java 1.4.0_01, but I cannot get it to work with Opera or Netscape 4.79 on my system at all and I very rarely use IE.

Look at my numbers below:

With all this I have been kicked from Chat maybe 2 times. I just re-enter the room. My resourses aren't compromised. I've read all the posts and chatted with quite a few of you in Chat about this and cannot determine any common denominator. I have experienced similar bugs in other chats and....? Quite an interesting mystery, eh, me maties? I think it's just an inherent quirk of applets. Is there any solution to being Java'ed?
