Very funny, but then I couldn't type.

Before this thead gets buried in idle chatter, there are two valid Comments and Suggestions sitting there. Summary:

1) The button is only located at the bottom, which is annoying for people who read threads newest first and then have to go all the way down again.
2) The "Show Quick Reply anyway" button feature manifests a bug when the person sorts threads newest post first, in that it only allows the QR button to be used on the page with the earliest quotes.

There's also a lot of discussion as to whether the Newest First view is worth having as an option anyway; at least one person is known to prefer it (how many people make the change is a secret only the oracle of the database could tell). And there's some joking about.
Now I hope that Techguy sees this.

I just switched to "Linear - Oldest First" mode. Now when I come to this thread it shows my first post which is post #1 (page 1). If I want to read the latest (newest) post, I have to click on "page 3" and then scroll down to see it. Of course the "Reply" button and "Quick Reply" box are there too when I finally get there.

Does everyone have to go through all of that to see the latest post? ...or do I need to change something else yet??
I thought "Oldest First" view setting would at least still take me to the last page so only scroll down would be needed. Am I wrong??

I've worked that way from the beginning. Not so much by intent/design (read conscious consideration) but it was (if it didn't actually come by default, can't remember) the first option I chose and I've gotten used to it, plus I find it convenient. In the community forums there are threads that go on for pages and ages and clicking "last page" on the thread title suits me well. There are always a couple of posts I haven't yet read but that need reading (or not). Of course I could set it the other way round and get used to that.

But then I'd have the darn reply box at the older post at the bottom again.

You probably realize that I can read deleted posts, so in reply to yours I agree it was a bad idea. I tried it and it doesn't work very well at all.

You're not wrong, that's the way it is. Depending where you're coming from you can sometimes click straight to the last page, and the links in your email notifications take you to the newest post you haven't seen yet (or last one if you've seen them all). It can be navigated fairly smoothly if you get used to it, but it isn't as convenient as the newest first mode in that regard.

On the positive it is much easier when you need to read through the background of what has or hasn't been said and suggested already if you read oldest first and work down. I think that for that reason alone for regular helpers the oldest first mode is best. For people who generally only start threads and ask questions, being involved from the start anyway, it's a matter of preference.

So am I to understand that everyone has to click on either "last page" or the number of that page in order to get to the newest post? How inconvenient. If that's the case, then "Newest First" is way better, or at least quicker. And I agree.... It's all in what you get use to. Might I suggest you try using "Newest First" for at least three days, and then decide which is more user friendly for you. Just a suggestion.

I still think having a reply button on the top of the page is a good idea. Just my opinion, for whatever that's worth to anyone else.

I look at it like I would at a book. But that's my preference, doesn't mean anyone else has to share it.

But for monitoring threads (Community or Tech) it fulfills my need for consecutiveness of development (as Ent has correctly referred to). That can include (on the Tech side) evaluating newest information/advice latest (when I come to it) in light of previous advice (that I've looked at earlier).

The last person to post isn't always right but just as often more correct than the previous posters. Without the history both aspects can be missed.

Hmmmm doesnt one read a post before a reply ..why would one want to scroll to read through a post then scroll back up to respond.

However I can think of a few threads where reply at the top would be a benefit..In these threads one isnt responding to a post but merely pasting real fast..so reply at the top would be of benefit ...A billboarders dream.

When you visit the Site Comments & Suggestion (or any) forum, beside the title of each thread to the left you will see a downward arrow if there are new posts. If you click on that it takes you to the first post that you haven't read yet and then you just keep reading the rest. It's very simple.

BTW, I've been in touch with Mike about this and he's been working on the Reply button at the top for you but just hasn't got it working properly yet.

Yes, I've seen that arrow and the link by it. I've tried that, but it didn't work like you explained. It only takes me to the top (newest) post. In this thread it was your post. I hadn't read aka Brett's post yet and it didn't take me to that one. Maybe that's because I have Newest First set again, and that link only works for Oldest First. I don't know... and doesn't matter.

Thats how I usually do it as well Nice and easy
At times i will have already read them though and go back later and just go to the last page.

Is there anyway to have it show only for those that sort posts backwards?..I am just looking at it from a scroll standpoint....I read the last couple posts..then boom there is the reply button...perfect.

Am hoping there will be a way to disable it in options if it shows for everyone regardless of sort options.

To be honest I dont understand the logic behind it going to be at the top.
One reads a post..then replies...why would one want to go back "up the hill" to hit reply.
If one didnt want to read the post but wanted to just have a fast way to post..I can understand at the top


Also to consider...One could have the PERFECT excuse for "not seeing mod or admin warnings"

IMO adding a reply at the top is just a bad idea

Even with newer posts first,when one reads the post..reply is at the bottom...{We do read the posts right so we know what we are responding too
Take your post here for instance..When I read it- it took a little over a page..so I had to scroll a touch..then there is the reply button.

Many posts can be long and require one to scroll down anyway..just to read the post...then boom replt just where you need it

However if the post is very short..then reply is present anyway without having to scroll...so why would need to be at the top?
Examples would be word game threads etc....A one liner...reply is already available with out the need to scroll

Brett, when you have your display set to Newest First, you won't have a reply button after reading the last post in the thread because the previous posts are all below that so they would have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, which can be 30 posts (again depending on settings). So even if the post they're replying too is a long one, it's probably shorter to scroll up to hit the Reply button that it would be to scroll down.

OK, I bit the bullet and changed my settings so I could see what you're seeing (I know how it displays but it's easier to test when you're in the same mode). But it sounds like you're not actually clicking on the arrow itself but on th link beside it, which is the title of the thread. Clicking on that will take you to the last post of the thread (if you're viewing newest first) and to the first post of the thread (if you're viewing oldest first). It's the arrow that you need to click on to go to the first post that you haven't yet read in the thread.

I'm sure there are others who prefer that display but you may just be the "squeaky wheel" they've been waiting for. I don't see any reason to remove the option as it's a matter of preference.
