Cgi Counter Script Setup
I was using a freebee visitor counter that kept track of visitors, reloads and other stats and all of a sudden today they just disappeared from the net and now I am at a loss as how to set up my own counter with stats.

I have downloaded a few cgi scripts but I have no idea how to set them up.

Can someone help me with this. A good script to download and also how to set it up so I can keep track of the visitors and reloads along with other stats.

When it comes to cgi scripts I am at a loss but I don't want to use a site like I was using and have them just go bye-bye and I am stuck with nothing again.

Thank all who can help with this.

you could use a asp counter instead.

this example might help.

I am sure you could make it more advanced than that, but it's a start.

I gave it a try on my web space, but it doesn't add on to the hits, but that's just because I only have limited asp permissions for my server. It looks like it would work though if running your own server.

Shadow2531 thanks for the suggestion. I looked at the site but it isn't exactly what I am looking for. I have that in my stats but what I am looking for is a "Visitor Counter" that keeps track of unique visitors and reloads along with a counter for the page.

I have downloaded a couple of scripts but I am to stupid to understand how to set up the cgi bin and the other files.

If I can find someone who can tutor me along on one that I have downloaded or help me with one that they might be familiar with would be great but unless the instructions are in layman's terms I believe it cannot understand what they want me to do.

Once again thank you and have a wonderful day.

oh ok i see.

yeh you can still do that with asp.

I haven't messed much with cgi because I got to pay extra $$$ to use it on my web space, so I can't offer much info on it besides searching on the web for scripts, but you already know how to do that.

So I'm not much help on this one, but if I come across any good cgi tutorials links, I'll post just in case you haven't already read them.

I just suggested asp because for what you want, all you need is one simple asp file. asp seems pretty simple to set up. Of course cgi might be pretty simple too.

I set up my own offline server so I can test out some cgi scripts to see if I can get the hang of it.

I am starting out with this tutorial

maybe that will help.

I got some things working once I downloaded and installed active perl

I am using win2k, with IIS installed of course.

I made a web page named test.shtml and put it in my wwwroot folder.

then I download various perl cgi scripts and saved them to my c:\intetpub\scripts folder. for example test.pl

then I edited the test.shtml file and put the following in the code to load the script.

PHP Code:
<!--#exec cgi="/scripts/test.pl"-->
that worked for me. Of course I don't know what I am doing yet.

This may help also.

with that said, maybe you can get some of the scripts you found to work.
