What is a good/free site counter?
I would like a site counter that collects statistical information for development purposes and that doesn't share my visitor's information with it's "partner" companies.

You can get one free at:

http://www.bravenet.com/

Will generate lots of stats. Charts, graphs, stats, addresses, etc. You can set it up to be either public or private as to who can access the data.

About the sharing part, who knows. They all probably lie about what they do anyway.

There is a little generator thing what will generate the code for it, plus you can test and play with it, before deciding on exactly what looks good. Fairly good selection to choose from.

Sitemeter is pretty good, but I believe they do share information. I think it would be hard to find a free one that doesn't.

That's just too bad there aren't any free services... you have to pay one way or another... I'll look into bravenet but I think I'll stay away from sitemeter... their privacy policy sounds like doubleclick and I don't want some company spying on my visitors... I know I don't want people spying on me.

Does your server support PHP, CGI, ASP, etc? There are free scripts you can install on your server to do the hit counter and stats yourself.

No, my server doesn't support any of those... if it did I wouldn't be lookin' for a free one.

statcounter.com is free, you can make your own counter interface or choose a premade skin all for free, no ads and no catch.

Thanks hexstar... it has really detailed stats and they say they don't share the information. I'm definately using this service from now on.

Sure thing, just one thing. I know you probably don't want to do this (me neither but I want to keep the service running): when you're board and have nothing better to do, click there links, it supports them and keeps them running.

No problem... I sure would hate to see that service die off or be forced to sell information.
