I just found out that .png supports alpha transparency... is there a reason I shouldn't use it? This adds some new possibilities to web design as long as there are no support problems.

Go ahead and use it! The browser support is now very good for it, although some obscure browsers might not handle png properly.

IE has supported PNG since version 4 (although Mac support wasn't available in that version). I would think the bugs have been ironed out since then.

IE supports png transparency but you might find it not always displaying it correctly. I've come across this myself designing websites.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll experiment with this a bit.
