Arrow Programming.. which package to choose.....
I am about to carry out a project for my course and was after some advice as to the best course of action to take.

I have to design and implement a function that will return a formatted string corresponding to an integer.

parameters

Integer
width of formatted string (integer)
boolean indicating leading zeros rather than spaces.

e.g.
formattedString(314,6,true)
returns
000314

formattedString(-320,8,false)
returns
bbbb-320

To do this i have a choice of language to use. The purpose is to write the actual function and not use any functions that are in standard libraries.

My question is this!

I have VERY basic knowledge in C & VB and access to VB/C/C++ and was wondering what people felt would be the best package to use. I am personally leaning towards VB as i am more comfortable with it.

Suggestions and reasoning if you will!!!

Thanks in advance...

I am not really familier with any of those languages, but I can say that VB is generally regarded as the easier option. It also has the advantage of being in common use for Web-Programming as well as normal applications. However, C and C++ seem to be the main languages used in programming, especiallywhen it comes to PC games.

Do some research into what each is used for (in the main), what employers would look for (I'm presuming it's for a future job?) and make a decision on that. There are also plenty of sites out there dedicated to these languages. Google's Directory lists tons of sites.

If you don't already know how to do this in the languages in which you have very basic knowledge, then I would suggest that you stick with VB. It will be much easier for you to expand your knowledge sufficiently to create your function.

Plus, strings are FAR simpler in VB than in C++.

I agree with the previous posts. VB would be the easier way to go. Work on it and once you have figured out the logic behind the functions and completed the project maybe try to rewrite/convert it to C++. It would be excellent practice and it will help you get accustomed to the differences in the two languages. This is a great thing so that when your programming you don't get confused in what code is for what language.
