Angry Microsoft Office 97 Install error
Help please! My husband purchased Microsoft Office 97 Pro off of ebay. He paid , I think about $100 for it.

The problem is, when trying to install it on the system, we keep getting the following error message: "Setup Error 797- Object 3600- Your setup files maybe damaged. Try restarting the setup program from where you originally run it."

We've tried that and sometimes we get a message saying that the install may damage my computer.

Can anybody help. Please tell me he hasn't been had.

Helpful wife.

So which of the possible causes applied to your situation, and which solution(s) did you try?

I tried the restarting of the computer in MS-mode deleting the Win386.swp file and then load it up. It still gave the same error. I'm using Window 98 OS. Could that be the problem Office 97 compatible with Win 98 OS?

Look at the surface of the CD, it sounds like you have a lovely scatch that is keeping the CD-ROM from reading the data. $100 for Office 97? They saw him coming, i bet it's not even SR-1

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about a media defect. Sometimes a damaged CD can be read on another unit (if the damage is not too severe), and you can make a copy. You should definitely try copying the CD on another unit, if possible. Small scratches can sometimes be repaired using various CD repair kits (approximate cost: $15.00, but often found for less on sale). You can also contact the eBay seller and report the problem; the CD may have been damaged in shipping, and the shipping company may be liable. I believe eBay also automatically insures buyers against defective or fraudulent merchandise up to $200 ($25 deductible), so you may be able to recover some of the money spent.

Hope this helps -- and good luck.

Smile Microsoft Office 97 Install error
Ha! Thanks a lot for your help. Although I wasn't able to install due to the damage. Your leads were on the money. LOL

My husband is now in the process of trying to recover the monies from the seller. I don't know how well that'll be. Anyway, we'll check with ebay about the insurance and see how it all falls out.

Ha! here's a kicker for ya.

He purchased the 97, because he just purchased a new custom computer that came without office. He thought he had it at work, but when he went to look for it, couldn't find it. We needed it for my son, who is a homeschooler. He needed office to do his work online. Anyway, long and short of it. After this event took place. He decided to clean up his office at work and low and behold he found office 2000 under all that junk.

There's a life story behind every problem

Thanks again, and can I add you to my buddy list? Seems you are a time saver. I appreciate all of your expertise in this matter.

I'll shoot you an update. If there is any.

You might try one of the CD scratch removers that are on the market. I know they work with music CD's, I don't see why they wouldn't work on computer software as well.

Thanks for your kind words. Hope things work out for you and your husband with the eBay seller (most folks are honest, in my experience). You will undoubtedly be better off with Office 2000 than with Office '97 -- and if your husband's desk is anything like mine, it would cost far more than $100.00 to get someone to clean up the mess! ().

Good luck with your eBay negotiations.
