I'm creating an .html page to use on my desktop rather than a wallpaper and icons. What would be the link to lets say my recycle bin ( 'trash' ) or my computer ( 'com' ) since they don't really have a c:\ address.

Those items are registry entries. Active Desktop is a huge performance hit also, so if you aren't concerned with it go ahead and run it.
