Stop a process running all the time.
Hi
How do I write a batch or script file to stop a process, instead of opening Task Manger and stoping the process manually.
I need the process to startup but don't need it running all the time.
Thanks

In XP Pro they are called services. you can create a batch file you can run from the desktop using the "net stop service_name". What is the particular service you are trying to stop and start?

Stopping a process
Hi Rockn
It's not one on XP own processes, it is an anti-thieft software package that dials home if stolen or at a certain time of day or when the system is rebooted.
I want to stop it running ater the system boots up ok.
It inteferes with my ISP dialer software, until I stop in running in task manager.
it's name is etph3.exe, if thats of any help.

thanks again.

Does it show up as a running service in the admin console? If it's not you could create a service for it using C++ and start and stop is as mentioned earlier. Does it start from the Windows startup or a registry entry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key?

You have XP Pro, you can use taskkill.

Create a batch and use that when you want to kill it.
taskkill /IM etph3.exe

You could even create a batch which runs the taskkill and then dials your ISP.

If you want to force it to terminate use the /f switch too.

If you like, you can also kill it by putting the batch in the startup Folder. You might even time it using a script. After two or three minutes it runs taskkill. However you like.
