Question about an Online Database
Hello ...

I have a question. I want to develop an online fault logging system, using MySql, Apache and PHP. My first question is can I do this on a Windows Platform? Can this software be downloaded for free? if so, where from?

My second question is if/when I have a apache web server up an running on a windows 2000 platform, do I need to have a fixed ip address? Currently, I am on a dial-up connection.

Many thanks

Asad

You can go at the links below to download
http://www.php.net
http://www.apache.org
http://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysql-3.23.html

For the rest of the answers, wait for some more knowledgeable person to drop in here. However, running a web-server on a dial-up connection is not the best thing to do. Here in India, its damn costly. Secondly, you may not have required bandwidth on a dial-up.

It also means that you're site ain't going to be up unless you keep the dial-up alive. Even if you have one of these 24/7 deals, I would not recommend it as they tend to kick you off every so often to stop people hogging their bandwith downloading DVIX movies on P2P.

If you really want to host it yourself, broadband is your best bet, but even then you could have troubles. You really should check the ISP's terms and conditions, as many have clauses against "excessive use" of their services, and hosting a website counts as being excessive.

As for your first question, PHP is a multi platform language, so yes, it is possible. And if you have already got PHP, Apache and MySQL, you're sussed. They are all free, but PHP and Apache are not much fun to download on a Dial-Up (personal experience)...

Many many thanks ...

I'm hoping (and i might be wrong) if I can develop and test on a dial-up connection, when I get some money together i'll either go with a domain or broadband option.

Thanks again ....

Just set it up on a LAN and test it that way. Use it as an intranet application.

Or take a free hosting account and check out your site. If you want, I can give you a month's free (without ads, of course) account on my servers (Red Hat Linux)

You need to have your domain though.
