I guess there is no default size. In a way there cannot be a default size. You are never sure what screen resolution is a user using. Your web-page may get displayed on 640x480 or 800x600 (most popular) or 1024x768 (I use this) or 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 or even higher.

So there cannot be a "one size fits all" type of default values. All that you can do is specify the width of a table in pixels (not percent) and ensure that everything stays in there. So whatever the screen resolution, your layout will remain the same. Then you can think about a default size of a picture.

But still, you can specify the width. Not the height. Height will change as per the contents.

For a site to fit perfect on 800x600 resolution it should be 779 pixels wide, at least that's how big I was taught to make graphical layouts

You can use CSS to center your background and fix it as well, adding this in the head tags:

<style type="css/text">
BODY {
background-img url(url here, no "s);
background-position: center;
background-attachment: fixed;
}
</style>

You are right websurfer. You have to take some base resolution like 800x600. There can't be one default value.

Whole normal IE window at what screen resolution? It all depends on that. That is what I told you in my first post. The image size will be different in each machine that views your web-page.

In my office itself, we have 4 monitors - two 15" and two 17". Consequently, there are 4 screen different screen resolutions. Two are 800x600 and one is 1024x768 and one is 1280x1024. So the size of maximised IE window will be different on each resolution.

You can try to guess what that size may be if you want.
That's why some sites say something like "best viewed at 800X640" for eg.

Usually, the image size is somewhat smaller than the screen resolution becuase some pixels are used up by the borders of the browser window, scrollbars, status bar, toolbar, etc.

I really do not know the exact values, you can resort to some small trial and error routine to find it out. All the best
