Unhappy Is it Namo, Frontpage, Geocities or Me?
Hello, how are you? I am a newbie and this is my 1st try at designing a website for our family. I have plans to learn html, but for the time being I'm doing it by WYSIWYG (I know, ugh!). I have a free geocities acct./pagebuilder. However, I tried to design it with the help of Frontpage 2000. When I upload everything and previewed it (after getting the because it wasn't designed with page builder... alert) it looked crummy, whereas it looked okay at Frontpage's preview. I then downloaded a trial version of Namo 5.5 (I liked it better than Frontpage, though I 'm no expert by far) and it was better than perfect! Yet when I uploaded to my geocites site and previewed for trial purposes it was crummy! With either program there's crazy characters, everythings out of line/order, some graphics/background won't appear, and totally jumbled. I've check to make sure everything is uploaded and perfect beforehand. Is it me? The programs? Geocities? I'm about to snatch myself bald!!!
I'll accept any recommendations...I was trying to see if this is doable before I invest in a domained plan and/or a design program. I don't want to give up...Thank you, alifegiver

I really think it would help you a lot to get some more backround on html. This link should show you all you need to know to be able to build a webpage. I hope it helps.

My experience is that many folks have problems with Geocities. On some forums, files you load onto Geocities will not appear/work. While I use a html editor called Spinner, I understand that Froontpage is fine. My suggestion would be to use another server for your web page.

I get 25mb of space with my ISP, Comcast. You might check your ISP and see if they offer space. If not, here is a link to tons of free sites, some without ads. Look here. It is free, so give it a go. I bet a cup of coffee, Frontpage will work for you. That's my view.

It would be helpful if you were to post a link to your site so we can see it first hand. Or at least post your code.

A problem with WYSIWYG is that often links are not relative, but absolute. This means that when pointing to an image it will point to something like c:/my documents/webpage/image.gif instead of just pointing to image.gif. When you upload it, the c drive no longer exists and so the image is not displayed. This would be the first thing I look out for.

I use Namo 5.5 and have no problems with it -- in fact, I like it a lot. I have no experience with Frontpage but have tried other trial versions (a Coffeecup or something like that) and didn't like it much. Just my two cents.

Can you give the link of any of your jumbled up page at geocities?

Do you plan to make online photo albums there?

Guess what! I just figured out it was ME! Being the newbie that I am, I just discovered my error...oh my goodness this is too newbian to type! Geocities previewing tab isn't the same as seeing it at the actual URL!

Thank you for helping me, especially AbvAvgUser and Fyzbo for asking for the link to check it out, which led to my discovery

Each new mistake takes you to an upper level. I joined this forum to ensure that I don't make them myself to learn and vice versa.
