Mod making
Hello all
for ages now i have wanted to learn to make games because i want a job in this industry. i understand that there is a lot of competition out there and employers such as ravensoft usually ask for example games that you have made or mods for games that the company have made. Well to be honest i have no idea where to begin i have never attempted it i know it sounds strange because i want a job in this field but i have been studying and just finished. I was wondeirng if someone could give me some help for example websites, pointers into languages to use please.

Thank you

I can't point you to any good sites or literature (I'm no games programmer), but I can give you little bits of advice I've picked up.

Firstly, make sure you read up on C/C++/C#. Most games are coded in varients of C, and if it isn't, the language they use is probably very similar to it.

Then, invest in a copy of QuakeIII. Get all the patches to make sure it's a recent build and then get the source code for it (methinks you can get it from the maker's -id - website). I think you may be able to do the same with Half Life.

Start out small. You are very unlikely to be able to create something like Team Fortress or Counter-Strike immediately. One fairly common mod in QuakeIII is changing the plasma rifle into a flamethrower - a matter of changing the colour of the plasma to orange and editing the name.

And lastly, don't worry too much about not being able to get a job without past experience. Employers do understand that you need to start out somewhere. If you have agood degree or similar qualifications, you could strike lucky. Either that, or you could try and work your way up the ladder from - say - testing.

Sorry if that's all a bit vague. I try...
