Java Question
Ok im running Windows 2000 , and most java will load and gives me no problem, but few sites come up with a red X and wont load. Any ideas as to why some load and some dont? I know these other sites work cause they load for other people. If anyone has any ideas id appreciate it.

Do you have the Sun Java Runtime Enviroment installed? What browser is this happening in? Running a Firewall like Norton Security 2003?

Some sites work with either version of Java. Some only with Microsoft'e Java Virtual Machine, and some with only Sun's Java Runtime Environment. Since Microsoft's version works so much better than Sun's, it is probably best to keep it as the default. But you can still install Sun's version for when you need it.

You can download the MS version here:

http://cocoon.mhd.com/msjavx86.3810.exe

You can get Sun's piece of junk from here by clicking the "Get it now" button in the upper right corner:

http://java.com/en/index.jsp

After installing both, go to the Control Panel and you will see a Java applet placed there by the Sun installation. By clicking that (you'll probably have time to make a sandwich while you wait for Sun's applet to respond) and then the Browser tab, you can check the boxes to make Sun's your default Java, or uncheck the boxes to make MS your default Java. If a site doesn't work with one, try the other.

Before you install the Sun version, be sure to check whether you have it already in Add/Remove and remove the older version. Sun's programmers were playing hookey the day "updating" was discussed in class and their idea of an update is to install yet another version so that you'll end up with a new one for each installation.
