Do you have a domain name registered?

IF not, then get a redirect name. The two best i know are http://www.shorturl.com/ and http://www.cjb.net/...shorturl being best. With these, you tell them your sites address, and they make it so that when you go to www.jasd;lkf.something.com you go to your site. I had one of both at one time, with shorturl mine was www.k-pages.vze.com, and with cjb it was www.k-pages.cjb.net.

Like i said, do you have a domain name registered?

not registered yet...but can be done.

if registered can I use that name and have it served on the charter.net
free webspace with that name using some code.

Or are my only options what name charter gives me, host it myself, or have someone host it for me.

riversedge21.

with freeparking and i suspect the other sites given here (so you need to check them out a decide which one you want, i can only talk about freeparking)

so you copy your website to the ftp area of webpages.charter.net/username. that you have been given.
check it all works OK y going to webpages.charter.net/username
so thats all working.

then you pay your money and register for whatever domainname is free and you want
£9.99 for 2 years for a .co.uk
see prices http://www.freeparking.co.uk/default.asp?f=6 for other options
.com £29.98 for 2years.

once signed up for domainname lets say its www.yourbusinessname.co.uk

you then on registration are asked for where you would like your domain re address to

so you type in webpages.charter.net/username

now whenever someone puts in a webpage www.yourbusinessname.co.uk it will goto
webpages.charter.net/username but the user thinks its still at www.yourbusinessname.co.uk

now you can also have emails name@yourbusinessname.co.uk goto any email address you like..

the only downside is if you send an email out it wont have your domainname

hope that helps

I guess what you want is a subdomain. For example, http://subdomain.yourdomain.com. Am I right? Whether you can do this or not depends on your host.

If you are looking for http://www.yourdomain.com/partofyoursite then its pretty simple. Just create a folder by that name and keep it in the root directory. Ensure that you keep a index.htm file (or any other file as per the requirements of your hosting service provider)

thanks for being patient with me...I am new to this.

From my understanding, if I get a redirection from webalias or freeparking I
have to pay small fee and won't get businessname.com but businessname.co.uk or something similar but not www.businessname.com.

I can already alias it to businessname.charter.net with html code but want businessname.com.

Is the only way to get businessname.com to host it myself or have it hosted.

It is a startup small business not doing online sale so website is for corp. presence so I don't think it would be worth it to buy hardware for server or t1 line (or could I get away with 64bit amd gig ram raid pc with broadband connection for server).

Or should I have someone host it for $10 or so a month so I can have www.businessname.com and email@businessname.com

Or is there a way to have www.businessname.com and email@businessname.com with my charter cable webspace
through website code.

Thanks again hope this explains my situation better.

What you need to do is register the domain name. There are many places to do so, I use godaddy.com. It only costs about $20 a year. Once you have the domain name, you can do a response redirect page from it to your site on charter.net.

You can surely get businessname.com provided it is available. You can try for variants like businessnameuk.com or business-name.com. These are called domain names. You can register them for as cheap as $ 12 a year or even lesser. Go to http://www.godaddy.com or http://www.on4ever.net.

After it is registered, you have to hire server space. Price range is very vast. It varies from free to US $ 999 per month or even more. Initially, you can go for something free. Later if necessary, switch over to something paid depending on your budget and needs. There are many options available. Then you can have your site as http://www.yourdomain.com and have your email as mail@yourdomain.com.

But don't go for a free domain name. Register it using a credit card at any of the registrar's site.

as i said try here http://www.freeparking.co.uk/default.asp?f=6 and you can get a load of different domain extensions

.com etc

so if the name you want is free you can have www.businessname.com for 29.98

Definitely go with www.godaddy.com . Very reliable, excellent price and excellent support. They have an 800 number. I recommend them.

My vote too goes to GoDaddy.com.

But if you have fallen in love with the interface of some other registrar who is more expensive than godaddy, then here's a way to save some money.

Register with godaddy for 9 years (max is 10 years). After 60 days, transfer the domain to the other registrar. You will pay the registration charges for 1 year and also get an extension of 1 year on domain. That will make it a registration of 10 years and you will enjoy the interface you love at cheaper rate

Thank you for all your help....Ended up going with IX webhosting saver plan for 6.95 a month + free domain registration. They have lots of options and utilities. So far I am very pleased with there service.

Again I want to thank everyone for helping,

Sean

P.S.

If anyone knows how to help me with making a canvas of a logo in fireworks
invisable they would be a godsend...my brother paid for a logo design and I wanted to use the logo minus the text on another part of the website so I used the magic wand feature to copy the parts I wanted to a new file then used the fit to canvas feature and modify canvas color to transparent.

First problem: inserted layer on site using dreamweaver then inserted image in layer but when preview site there is still some canvas color in background.

Second problem: tried to work around that by changing canvas color to similar website background but canvas is square and want circle logo inside circle spot on site and square canvas extends into circle spot on site covering other layer.

Third problem: tried to work around by making circle canvas but can't figure out how to if it even can be done.

Perplexed,

Sean

Just my opinion. $ 6.95 per month is pretty steep!! You can also get something for less than half that price!

i thought you wanted to redirect to a existing web host - even in UK that is a very high price to pay, domain names are as cheap as £20.00 per year with free hosting... thats less that £2 / month
