creating standalone applications
Are there any good free programs that will turn BASIC scripts into a standalone application.
If not BASIC, are there any other easy-to-learn languages that can be turned into standalone applications for free? I tried JAVA, but I can't install the SDK or whatever it is you need to write programs. Thanks for you help!

See if JavaScript satisfies your needs. All that a user needs to run JavaScript programs is a browser. And you may need a minimum of a notepad type of text editor. Of course, better HTML editors will make your life easy.

However, what problems did you face while installing Java SDK?
