Registering Domain Names
I've researched for days domain name registration and have received a great amount of information in regards to it, but I feel this need to post my very own thread here to see what type of response I will get at the present time. It seems that alot of people have agreed that godaddy is a very good place to register domain names, especially for the price. There are only a few complaints compared to the numerous pat on the backs for this company.

I have a friend who wants to register several domain names (3 for sure at this time). Eventually, we will be wanting a web hosting site, but not at this exact time. That will take even more research IMO. Anyways, I've noticed that there are large differences in the costs. One thing I have learned from researching TSG is that it is very important that we have total DNS control and this is exactly what we want since the website will be for his business(es). When I visited godaddy, they were definitely the cheapest I could find. Am I reading the information right at the following link?

https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/domai...rog_id=GoDaddy

This package includes, but not limited to, total DNS control at the rate of $7.95 a year? This doesn't appear to be a monthly rate, but a yearly rate? Is this too good to be true? Should I be seeing a red flag here?

Would those of you who have registered domain names use godaddy?

Looking forward to the responses. Thanks for your time.

ooops!!! I just realized that I most likely should have posted this in the "Web & Email" forum. Sorry for the ignorance. If a moderator feels the need to move this, by all means please do.

It's fine right here. This is sort of to do with Web dev.

I use www.ev1servers.net and love it.
Don't confuse domain name registration with hosting.
If you want to park your domain, you need hosting, and I suggest www.lunarpages.com for about $95/year. Unlimited emails, 800MB space. Can't beat it. I have two domains there.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input Dreamboat! Its nice to get advice from people I trust. I understand the difference in registration and hosting, believe it or not. LOL But, we aren't ready for the website yet, and godaddy will park domain free with registration. I don't really think we need as much as you posted above, but worth a looksee. When we do get a host and upload a website, it'll mostly be a catalogue type site listing products. No direct sales, he wholesales to retailers. We will have a link page too.

Thanks again for your response, much appreciated.

I've told you before, but www.000domains.com is where I register my domains.

They are more expensive at $13.50/year, but they allow domain forwarding from their own site, as well as allow you to park their, with a choice of statements.

I have also trasnferred ownership of domains from them to another crowd for someone, and the process was painless and easy. that's not always the case with other companies.

As to hosting, compare the various packages at Netfirms. this is another crowd I have parked sites at for free, as well as using their paid services.

Yes Randy, got your information and its greatly appreciated. I forwarded your referral along with the other information I received to the guys I'm doing this for. Thanks for taking the extra time to post here, even though you sent this information to me already. I finally got around to emailing you. I was quite frustrated yesterday with the problems I had getting TSG to work for me again. I reposted in "Site Comments" again yesterday and just a few minutes ago.

Posting the info here allows people to see it for themselves as well, and gives anyone a chance to post their own perceptions, or opinions.

Good luck with it all, and feel free to drop me a line if you need any other advice!

You can register domains and acquire hosting very cheaply at www.1and1.com (and I believe they will also park your domain for free). I have no affiliation with them other than as a satisfied customer. You might also consider www.rcthost.com for your hosting needs; they are generally pretty good, although they have been flakey as of late.

Hope this helps.

GoDaddy is the way to go for registering domains. You will have full control over that and you can also pay for a host to register and setup your DNS information to the hosting accoutn so that your site can be put up asap. We do that for our clients. Good luck on your search for a good host and registrar.
