what would you recommend for online credit card transactions?
what software would you recommend for online credit card transactions? eg, if someone wanted to buy something from a business and they were paying online using their credit card.

the software im looking for must be able to be linked up to a bank account in the UK, and be cost effective... preferably cheaper but do the same work. should i use a SSL and have my own kind of system? or should i use pay pal or another system like it? (If i should use pay pal, are there any other similar systems like it? or is that the best?)

I'd personally recommend using something other than paypal. A lot of people don't have paypal. Well, suppose someone comes to your site and wants to buy something and they don't have paypal. This could very well discourage them from buying from your site because they don't want to go through the hassle of signing up for paypal. Having paypal would be a nice thing though for those who prefer to use paypal for online transactions but I would highly recommend having another way of processing transactions as well. Unfortunately, I am not educated in online businesses so I wouldn't be able to recommend any specific service to you. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Your bank should offer gateway services. Suggest you ask them first.

I think people can pay into your paypal account simply using their credit cards. They don't need a paypal account. Have a look at the link. Its 2.2% + $ 0.30 per transaction.

Here's a quote from Paypal's help
Quote:
Non-U.S. Accounts

Q. How do I withdraw funds from my PayPal account?

A. You can withdraw funds from your PayPal account by check that a check be sent to you by U.S. mail or by requesting an electronic funds transfer to your bank account. Show me

If you request an electronic funds transfer to your bank account, the funds should become available within 3-4 business days, depending on your bank's policies. If you request funds by check, allow 1 - 2 weeks for delivery. While there is no charge for an electronic funds transfer to your bank account, you will be assessed a $1.50 USD per withdrawal by check.

You will receive an automatic email acknowledgement every time you request to withdraw funds.
Payment gateways are somewhat expensive and wouldn't justify their cost unless you have high volumes. At least that is the scene here in India.

Take a look at Authorize.net
http://www.authorizenet.com/

It does cost money but it is good and reliable.
