display a files text through a hyperlink

I am trying to create some sort of data base, I would like to have a column on the left side of the page with an expandable tree of some files that I have and when you select the file you want, I want the actual files contents to show up in a text box or something on the right side of the page. How can I do this and what Office program should I use?
