I must have clicked on something which I was not supposed to do.
When I try to drag and drop a control box from the toolbox on the
form my cursor changes to a circle when leaving the area of the toolbox.
But the control stays in the toolbox.

Any hints ?

Are you defining the size of the area where the control should go? Just click the Control you want to add and then go to the form and left click while dragging the mouse over to define the control size. Next release the left button on the mouse and the control should appear.
