I have never known MS to give away free versions of VC++ 6.0, unless it was the early days like they were doing for Studio 2005 beta. From my understanding, it has always needed to be purchased so you have a valid license and you will get what you are wanting. There are websites that you can visit to download a copy illegally but I don't endorse the theft of software, even against Microsoft.

An alternative you might consider would be to check Ebay. Visual C++ 6.0 is not a hot item and there are plenty of auctions that you can get a legal copy for relatively cheap.
