My SQL Uninstalling Problems!
I was previosuly using MySQL version 3.1 and wanted to upgrade to 4.1. I unistalled the program using the normal method and deleted the remainder of the folder from C:\mysql. After this I began installing version 4.1 but get the message 'A Windows service with the name MySQL already exists are you sure you want to use this service name.' I clicked yes and executed the program but the service will not start. I found out information to type command in dos:

'mysqladmin -uroot -p shutdown'

then entered my password but then got the following message:

'mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)' Check that mysqld is running on localhost and that the port is 3306. You can check this by doing 'telnet localhost 3306'

but when i comply with this command the connection fails. All I want to do is install the upgrade and remove my old version completely from the machine. Can anyone help with this problem?

Try uninstalling the version you currently have installed.

Then try deleting the service if it's still running.

To see if the service is still running Right-Click My Computer and choose Manage.

Expand Services and Applications and then click Services.

Do you see MySQL or something similar to that? If so (and you're using Windows XP) try the following from the command line:

sc delete mysql
If the service runs under a different name than mysql then use that name.

If you are working with W2K or WXP, you can uninstall the MySql service that way :
- open a DOS window,
- cd until C:\MySql\bin is prompted,
- type the command mysqld-max-nt --removal
- exit the DOS window and delete the C:\MySql directory !
