How can I read a single character from the keyboard without waiting for the RETURN key?

Much like the INKEY$ function in QBASIC

Language is C.

Here's one way if you have conio.h

#include <stdio.h>
#include <conio.h> /* getch() lives here */

int main() {
    fflush(stdin); /* clear stdin buffer first */
    char c = getch();
    printf("%c\n", c);
    return 0;
}

And if you want the character to display when the user presses the key, change getch() to getche()

But from what I heard getch() and getche() aren't standard functions, they are M$ implemented.

They work though, which is good.

I'm not sure if they are ANSI standard or not, but they are not M$ in any case. I use them in Borland C <G>

On linux, if you want getch(), you might have to have curses.h or ncurses.h and include it. You might also have to link to an ncurses lib. Not sure, never messed with it.
