XP Home for developing?
Hi,

I just bought a Lenovo notebook 0768-5GG, 1.66Ghz Intel Duo , 512MB RAM, 80GB HD.
I'm studying IT, Second year now ad wanted to know if the XP Home OS (With SP2 included) that came along with the new laptop is good enough for developing in all the different enviroments - C, JAVA, Dot NET, Visual Studio, etc...

Or should I upgrade to XP Pro?

Thanks a lot...

Actually, better Linux, since IMO it's easier to install, and most of the more common distros come with development tools by default..

I doubt that you'd be able to develop in .net or Visual Studio on a Unix/Linux platform.

C and Java can be written, compiled, and run on any common platform. I prefer Unix, but others don't.

Depending on what your aim of programming is, it could be a help or a hindrance.

If your aim is to find a job as a programmer somewhere, then like it or not, .NET will probably come back to haunt you sometime, especially if you don't know how to program with that.

If you're just programming for leisure or to join the open source community, then I would strongly recommend that you stay away from the .NET stuff, since most ppl (like me, I'd imagine) don't like to install the .NET framework in my computer. Plus, the .NET technology and VB isn't portable between OSes other than the windows family
