C++ manual pages
I use Visual C++ 6 as an alternative C compiler to gcc on the X86 series.

I DO NOT like or use C++. Just plain vanilla C.

Many books on UNIX present it as a set of UNIX manual pages. Each gives the symtax and semantics of a command or system call.

In their wisdom, MicsoSoft provides a C compiler that uses different #include files for familiar UNIX calls like READ and WRITE.

I need a reference that will tell what MicroSoft #includes support things like READ and WRITE.

io.h (you may need to use underscore prefixes _read() _write() for your version?)

What version of the msdn help files do you have for your vc6 ?
The mappings for file handling are not 1 to 1 tho' and vary some with compiler version.
A good place to start would be
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...l/UCMGch09.asp
and click on the File and Data Access link.

That doc is available as a download in the following.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...tml/ucmglp.asp

I have several sets of MSDN Cd's and had the latest one installed. It was lost in yet another WINDOZE disaster, AND I can't find ANY of the CD sets right now.

I'm sure the answers would be in the MSDN stuff, and when/if I find them, I'll certainly install the newest one.

Thanks for you help. I may be agle to guess my way from here without the MSDN stuff.

Sometimes a word search through the include directories with something like 'Agent Ransack' can be your best friend
I think that the 'latest' msdn will reference a fair number of things incompatible with VC6. If you have an older one as well (ca 2000) - it might be good to install both.
