The definition of platform has several meanings in the computer industry.

From a computer perspective the most widely accepted meaning is that a platform is a combination of a pair (processor chip, operating system).

That said, there are many different platforms from which to choose.

Luckily, in general, you can choose from the Sun download website between, Windows, Linux/Unix, and Solaris platforms.

As to which is the best - take your pick - as Java is touted as an architecture independent language.
